Scottish animal artist HEATHER CARY has been painting animals professionally since 1982. Prior to that she completed 10 years commissioned service in the Women's Royal Army Corps and then worked in the City of London.
Heather's work is well known throughout Scotland and her success is largely due to her undoubted ability at capturing the "look" and "character" of her individual subjects. All her work is done on the understanding that clients do not accept pictures that they are not happy with, when asked about this Heather simply replies that she would not want to take a painting that did not capture her own animals! Portraits are done to commission, mainly in pastel, although other mediums can be employed if required. Heather prefers, where possible, to actually see the subject herself and to meet the owner in order to ascertain how they view their own animal. Where this is not possible portraits can, sometimes, be completed by using photographs only, but this is dependent on the quality of the photographs available. In addition to portraiture Heather is well known as a cartoonist and is often seen with a queue of people waiting for a sketch of their dog at Game Fairs! She often works from life while doing her cartoons much to the amusement of the onlookers! Heather also does book illustration, she did all the cartoon illustrations for BBC Radio 2 presenter Sarah Kennedy's "Terrible Pets" and more recently the line drawings for Lucinda Lister-Kaye's "The Aigas Cookbook"
