Some notes on the Book

'SCALE MODEL TRACTION ENGINE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION'

Direct from the Publisher/Author

BY RETURN OF POST

Of the 2,000 books printed less than 200 remain (as at Nov 26th 06). Camden are sold out. Available from all good bookshops by special order - but beware it might prove more expensive than direct from Little Samson Models.

This book is the most comprehensive guide to model traction engine building yet published. Every aspect of construction has been considered and covered in meticulous detail. A glance at the index will quickly confirm this.

In addition to detailed instructions for traction engine building the author has packed in a vast array of hints, tips, and useful set-ups, making the book a good read for both the novice and experienced builder. Every aspect of manufacture is described in turn, and the final section includes details on how to steam the completed model.

The text is illustrated with no fewer than 590 photographs and drawings. The book begins with superbly detailed cut-away line drawings of an agricultural engine, a steam road roller, a ploughing engine and a showman’s road locomotive. The text then moves on to the selection of a suitable model to build; the process being illustrated with 27 colour plates of completed models.

Primarily the book is concerned with 3”, 4”, and 6” scale models. However the book is equally valuable to builders in smaller scales as the skills are readily transferable.

The writing style is intended to be friendly and easily accessible, several amusing anecdotes and asides are included to make the book a relaxed and enjoyable read.
