Charlton School Firework Display
07 November 2003

Taking a camera straight out of the box to a firework display is not to be recommended, especially when your subject will be lit by a very strong yellow tinged floodlight shining from the wrong direction. However the opportunity to picture the Band in action at the Charlton School Firework Display was going to be an ideal rehersal for Santa's arrival on the Playclose ( touchdown time still to be decided, but no deviation from the usual date) so out of of the box came the camera and off we went.

For one horrible moment as we reached the school gate it looked as though the whole school was on fire and we might not be playing, but manning a chain of Fire buckets. This turned out to be an optical illusion. The the school was intact and the fire confined to the far corner of the playing field and the Band was to be kept well out of the way of the pyrotechnics underneath a convenient floodlight on the corner of the school buildings.

A major disadvantage of playing for an event like this is that you don't get to see the fireworks, although Simon did seem to manage to keep one eye on the proceedings while conducting.

The music? Royal Fireworks. Like the tomato soup that ended the evening. There are some things that you just can't improve on.
