Julian-Gregorian Calendar Changes

The table below lists the days which were missed from the calendar when countries changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. A separate table gives information about the change of New Year's day in various countries.

The data in this list have been obtained from a variety of books and web sites. In some cases, where sources differ, more than one date is shown.  The main sources can be found in the bibliography and web links.

This table lists the days which were omitted from the calendar, for example Aachen missed ten days - 4th to 13th November inclusive - from its calendar in 1583. In other words, 3rd November was followed by 14th November.

Alaska
on the morning of Friday 18th October 1867 (US time) the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the USA took place. There were two calendrical differences between Alaska's old and new owners: (1) Russia was using the Julian calendar and America the Gregorian and (2) Russia lies west of the international date line and America to the east.
The first difference would have resulted in Friday 18th (US time) being Friday 6th (Russia time), but for the date line difference. When Alaska was Russian it was deemed to be on the Russian side of the dateline - so, being 24hrs ahead of the US time, it was already Saturday 7th October.
Thus shortly after Saturday 7th had already started it became Friday 18th - Alaska had two consecutive Fridays, and the days 7th to 17th October were omitted.

Nova Scotia

a colony alternating in ownership between France and Britain
1604 - colonised by France as Acadia
1613 - English colonists invade from Virginia
1621 - letters patent from James I as Nova Scotia
1632 - French occupy after treaty of St Germain-en-Laye
1654 - Cromwell's English troops occupy
1667 - French occupy after treaty of Breda
1710 - English occupy
1713 - English possession confirmed by treaty of Utrecht.

Since France started using the Gregorian calendar in 1582 and Britain was using the Julian calendar until 1752 - throughout this period of Nova Scotian history the calendar used there would have been changing back and forth.

Sweden (not all sources agree)
It was planned to have no leap years from 1700 to 1740, by which time 11 days would have been lost and the calendar would be Gregorian - this would have been at the expense of being neither Julian or Gregorian during the intervening years.
The plan was carried out in 1700 but not implemented in 1704 or 1708, so Sweden was not Gregorian and was one day ahead of the Julian calendar. To revert to the Julian calendar an extra day (February 30th) was added to 1712.
The change was finally made in 1753 when 18 to 28 February were omitted.
