THE DESCENDENTS of MILES BOWES of WELBURY
This family probably originated
with MILES BOWES who died at Welbury, a village near Brompton in 1489. In the
16th century they moved to a farm just outside Brompton. There in the 18th century Rchard Bowes (1716-1790) built a farm house which
is still in existence although no longer occupied by members of the family.
Richard prospered as a farmer and purchased a large amount of land. On
his death he was buried in Brompton Church .
Richard's son George Bowes (1752-1841) is also buried in the
church at Brompton together with his wife Ann. After the Napoleonic wars
George fell into financial difficulties and was forced to sell much of his
property. He continued to farm at Brompton until the 1820s when his financial
difficulties were so great that he and his son William1789-1867
left Brompton and moved to Sunderland. William set up as a Corn Miller but
again failed in business and at the age of 70 emigrated with one of his sons John George to South Africa where he
died Another son Richard (1823-1854)
qualified as a solicitor in Sunderland. Some of his descendants live to
day in Australia. Another son Thomas, (1824-1899) remained in Sunderland.
It is from his children that the English lines of the Bowes Family of Brompton
are descended. They were: James
1853-1925, Thomas 1855-1931, Alfred 1868-1946, Arthur 1871-1942
To day there are branches of the
family in South Africa, Australia, North Yorkshire, Gloucestershire .
A member of the family emigrated
to Australia and faced great hardship. The account makes
vivid reading
