Thomas Bowes

Thomas Bowes (1824-1899)

After the financial collapse of the corn mill on the banks of the River Wear, Thomas Bowes became the Manager of Webster's Ropery in Sunderland County Durham. This was one of the first steam-powered roperies in the area. He married Sarah Dorothy Hall the daughter of a local shipbuilder and they had 10 children 5 of whom died in infancy.  His son Thomas wrote of him,” An affectionate Father, generous and hearty in his manner and I place on record that I bear both to him and my Mother feelings of great affection and respect”. His grandson, Charles said, :I remember him as an elderly but very benevolent grandfather usually sitting by the fire dressed in a velvet jacket and porkpie embroidered smoking cap, smoking a long churchwarden.”
