Land Rover was originally a trademark of the Rover Company, an independent car manufacturer based after 1945 at Solihull, in Warwickshire. In 1966, the Rover Company joined the Leyland Motors combine, which already owned Standard - Triumph and was itself an established truck and bus manufacturer.

In 1968, the British Government fostered a merger between Leyland and British Motor Holdings, itself only recently formed from the amalgamation of BMC (Austin, Morris, MG, Riley and Wolsely) with Jaguar (Which also owned Daimler and Guy). The result was the British Leyland Motor Corporation, most commonly known by its short name of British Leyland or BL. At this point, Land Rover became one of the many BL marques. BL moved into Government ownership in 1975.

Three years later, in 1978, Land Rover became a separate company for the first time when Land Rover Ltd was established as an operating division of British Leyland. During 1982, BL was renamed the Austin Rover Group, and from 1986 it was re-organised as the Rover Group. In 1988 the Rover Group was sold to British Aerospace, which sold it on again to BMW in 1994.

In May 2000 BMW sold Land Rover to the Ford Motor Company. Ford have committed to ensuring that Land Rover remains the best 4x4xfar.
