| BAYES IN THE UK Page 6 |
|
(Bear with me, the two photos here could take a little while to load!) |
| On the previous page, I
used an image of my Grandfather, Percy Bayes, taken from this
battered old photograph.
He's on the back row, fourth from the left, in this picture of a Hockey Team he had played for. I didn't know, for sure, where this team was from; it could have been Worksop in Notts. or Sheffield in Yorkshire. As my Grandad looks to be in his early twenties, it must be about 1905-1910. |
|
| Whilst I was in the area, I took the opportunity to visit Worksop to look up where Grandad was born, etc. I bought the Godfrey Edition reprint of an old map of the town, a usual practice, and also found a book for sale called 'Old Worksop' by David Ottewell. The old map, which was of 1914, and the book I thought would be excellent references for background history, etc. The book included a photograph of the Weslyan Chapel, (demolished and rebuilt after a fire, and recently replaced again), where my Great Grandparents got married. |
| Also
found in
the 'Old Worksop' book was a great
picture, of the local Tennis Club, a diverse group of all kinds of
folk.
Although my Grandad was not in the photograph, there were at least two faces I recognised from the Hockey Team! The bearded man on the right is on the Hockey photograph, as is the chap being lifted aloft, (the local champion?), who appears to be a key player in both sports. |
|
| So, now I know the Hockey team was from
Worksop. It just goes to show, you never know where the next clue to your family's history is going to turn up! |
