He displaye 2 CONC d his inveterate hostility to Charles in a speech delivered on 3 July 1645, before the lord m 2 CONC ayor and citizens of London, with reference to the discovery of the king's letters at Naseby 2 CONC . It was printed. In December 1647, when the king was confined in the Isle of Wight, Lisle wa 2 CONC s selected as one of the commissioners to carry to him the four bills which were to divest hi 2 CONC m of all sovereignty. He spoke in the House of Commons on 28 Sept. 1648 in favour of rescindi 2 CONC ng the recent vote, that no one proposition in regard to the personal treaty with the king sh 2 CONC ould be binding if the treaty broke off upon another; and again, some days later, urged a dis 2 CONC continuance of the negotiation with Charles. He wa 2 CONC s appointed on 8 Feb. 1648-9 one of the commissioners of the great seal, and was placed on th 2 CONC e council of state. 2 CONT 2 CONT Lisle became one of Cromwell's creatures. He not only concurred in December 1653 in nominatin 2 CONC g Cromwell protector, but administered the oath to him; and having been reappointed lord comm 2 CONC issioner, was elected member in the new parliament, on 12 July 1654, both for Southampton, o 2 CONC f which town he was recorder, and for the Isle of Wight. He selected to sit for Southampton 2 CONC . In June previously he had been constituted president of the high court of justice, and in A 2 CONC ugust he was appointed one of the commissioners of the exchequer. Lisle alone of his colleagu 2 CONC es proposed to execute the ordinance for the better regulation of the court of chancery, whic 2 CONC h was submitted to the keepers of the seal, and owing to his subserviency to Cromwell was con 2 CONC tinued in his office on the removal of his colleagues in June 1655. He was again confirmed i 2 CONC n it in October 1656 by Cromwell's third parliament, to which he was re-elected by Southampto 2 CONC n. In December 1657 Cromwell summoned Lisle to his newly established house of peers. A red bri 2 CONC ck manor house of the Stuart period, it is a handsome, well proportioned building with enormo 2 CONC us chimneys and projecting eaves. Dame Alice Lisle was its most celebrated occupant, her fat 2 CONC e being well documented as a victim of the Bloody Assize of 1685. Throughout its long histor 2 CONC y the manor of Ellingham and Moyles Court passed into various hands, or was leaked out to ten 2 CONC ants by absentee landlords. Domesday records show it as being held by Boln as an estate not s 2 CONC ubject to a feudal overlord. In 1086 the manor was held by Cola the Huntsman. 2 CONT The Meoles, or Moels family owned it in the 14th century and named it, now commonly spelt Moy 2 CONC les. [SIDNEY LEE] 2 CONT 2 CONT Article 2 CONT Lisle, Alice 1614?-1685, victim of a judicial murder, born about 1614, was daughter and heire 2 CONC ss of Sir White Beckenshaw of Moyles Court, Ellingham, near Ringwood, Hampshire. The register 2 CONC s at Ellingham are not extant at the period of her birth, about 1614. In 1630 she became th 2 CONC e second wife of John Lisle [q.v.]. William Lilly, the astrologer, states in his autobiograph 2 CONC y (p. 63) that Mrs. Lisle visited him in 1643 to consult him about the illness of her frien 2 CONC d Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke. A note states that at the date of Charles I's execution she was r 2 CONC eported to have exclaimed that ‘her heart leaped within her to see the tyrant fall;' but sh 2 CONC e herself asserted many years later that she ‘shed more tears' for Charles I ‘than any woma 2 CONC n then living did’ (State Trials, xi. 360), and she claimed to have been at the time on intim 2 CONC ate terms with the Countess of Monmouth, the Countess of Marlborough, and Edward Hyde, afterw 2 CONC ards lord chancellor. She probably shared her husband's fortunes till his death at Lausanne i 2 CONC n 1664. Subsequently she lived quietly at Moyles Court, which she inherited from her father 2 CONC , and she showed while there some sympathy with the dissenting ministers in their trials duri 2 CONC ng Charles II's reign. Her husband had been a member of Cromwell's House of Lords, and she wa 2 CONC s therefore often spoken of as Lady or Lady Alice Lisle. At the time of Monmouth's rebellio 2 CONC n in the first week of July 1685 she was in London, but a few days later returned to Moyles C 2 CONC ourt. On 20 July she received a message from John Hickes [q.v.], the dissenting minister, ask 2 CONC ing her to shelter him. Hickes had taken part in Monmouth's behalf at the battle of Sedgemoo 2 CONC r (6 July) and was flying from justice. But, according to her own account, Mrs. Lisle merel 2 CONC y knew him as a prominent dissenting minister, and imagined that a warrant was out against hi 2 CONC m for illegal preaching or for some offence committed in his ministerial capacity. She readil 2 CONC y consented to receive him, and he arrived at ten o'clock at night, a few days later, accompa 2 CONC nied by the messenger Dunne, and by one Richard Nelthorp [q.v.], another of Monmouth's suppor 2 CONC ters, of whom Mrs. Lisle knew nothing. Their arrival was at once disclosed by a spying villag 2 CONC er to Colonel Penruddock, who arrived next day (26 July) with a troop of soldiers, and arrest 2 CONC ed Mrs. Lisle and her guests. Mrs. Lisle gave very confused answers to the colonel, whose fat 2 CONC her, John Penruddock [q.v.], a well-known royalist, had been sentenced to death by her husban 2 CONC d. On 27 Aug. 1685 she was tried by special commission before Judge Jeffreys at Winchester, o 2 CONC n the capital charge of harbouring Hickes, a traitor. No evidence respecting Hickes's offence 2 CONC s was admitted, and in spite of the brutal browbeating by the judge of the chief witness, Dun 2 CONC ne, no proof was adduced either that Mrs. Lisle had any ground to suspect Hickes of disloyalt 2 CONC y or that she had displayed any sympathy with Monmouth's insurrection. She made a moderate sp 2 CONC eech in her own defence. The jury declared themselves reluctant to convict her, but Jeffrey 2 CONC s overruled their scruples, and she was ultimately found guilty, and on the morning of the ne 2 CONC xt day (28 Aug.) was sentenced to be burnt alive the same afternoon. Pressure was, however, a 2 CONC pplied to the judge, and a respite till 2 Sept. was ordered. Lady Lisle petitioned James II ( 2 CONC 31 Aug.) to grant her a further reprieve of four days, and to order the substitution of behea 2 CONC ding for burning. The first request was refused; the latter was granted. Mrs. Lisle was accor 2 CONC dingly beheaded in the market-place of Winchester on 2 Sept., and her body was given up to he 2 CONC r friends for burial at Ellingham. On the scaffold she gave a paper to the sheriffs denying h 2 CONC er guilt, and it was printed, with the ‘Last Words of Colonel Rumbold,' 1685, and in ‘The Dyi 2 CONC ng Speeches ... of several Persons,' 1689. The first pamphlet was also published in Dutch. Th 2 CONC e attainder was reversed by a private act of parliament in 1689 at the request of Mrs. Lisle' 2 CONC s two married daughters, Triphena Lloyd and Bridget Usher, on the ground that ‘the verdict wa 2 CONC s injuriously extorted and procured by the menaces and violences and other illegal practices 2 CONC ’ of Jeffreys. The daughter Triphena Lloyd married, at a later date, a second husband named G 2 CONC rove, and her daughter became the wife of Lord James Russell, fifth son of William Russell, f 2 CONC irst duke of Bedford. Bridget Lisle also married twice; her first husband being Leonard Hoa 2 CONC r [q.v.], president of Harvard University, and her second Hezekiah Usher of Boston, Massachus 2 CONC etts; a daughter, Bridget Hoar, married the Rev. Thomas Cotton (Notes and Queries, 2nd ser. x 2 CONC ii. 99, 3rd ser. iv. 159). 2 CONT Sources 2 CONT Howell's State Trials, xi. 298-382; Luttrell's Brief Relation, i. 357; Macaulay's Hist. vi. 3 2 CONC 02-4; C. 1676. Usher was a wealthy merchant of Boston, very eccentric, and, as hi 2 CONC s wife soon found, unsuited for domestic life. She lived unhappily with him until July 12, 16 2 CONC 87, when she sailed for England with her only surviving child, Bridget Hoar, and did not retu 2 CONC rn until after Usher's death which took place July 11, 1697, at Lynn. By the fall of his hors 2 CONC e his leg was so bruised or broken as to lead to his death. Sewall writes that he "grew distr 2 CONC acted" in his last illness, and his extravagant will indicates that his mind was not well bal 2 CONC anced at a much earlier day. This will is printed in full in the Historical Magazine for Sept 2 CONC ember, 1868. It is dated August 17, 1689, at Nonaicoicus Farm, an estate of four hundred acre 2 CONC s in what is now the town of Ayer, originally the property of Major Simon Willard. It is ver 2 CONC y lengthly and abusive in language. The following extracts concern his wife and her daughter: 2 CONC - "And to my dear wife, whom I may count very dear by her Love to what I had but not a rea 2 CONC l love to me, which should accounting it more worth than any other outward Enjoyment; and fo 2 CONC r her covetousness & overreaching & cunning Impression that has almost ruinated me by a gentl 2 CONC e behaviour, having only words but as sharp swords to me, whose Cunning is like those to be a 2 CONC s an Angel of Light to others but wanting Love and Charity for me ..... And therefore I do cu 2 CONC t her off from the benefit of all my Estate & do not bestow anything upon her but what the la 2 CONC w doth allow ..... But as to her Daughter Bridget if her mother had not been so underminin 2 CONC g & overreaching for her I should have been willing to have done what I could for her. And d 2 CONC o give her the Tumbler with the Arms of a Spread Eagle with two heads. (but I think one hea 2 CONC d for a body is enough.) and the Table Cloth of the best Damask, and the napkins thereto. An 2 CONC d this will I make to be a Warning to those women that have no Love for their Husbands, but t 2 CONC o what they have; ..... " Judge Sewall served as Madame Usher's attorney while she remaine 2 CONC d in England. In spite of the will she obtained possession of her late husband's house and gr 2 CONC ounds and there took up her residence. May 9, 1700, Sewall writes: "Madame Usher obtained Jud 2 CONC gment for her Dower in the Mansion House against the Town House yesterday. Brick Shops and wa 2 CONC re house are of the same title and will follow the Dwelling-house." She is invariably spoke 2 CONC n of by her contemporaries in terms of unqualified praise, as one who ever led a charitable a 2 CONC nd blameless life. After her funeral Rev. Thomas Foxcroft, pastor of the Old Church in Boston 2 CONC , preached a sermon upon "The character of Anna the prophetess considered and applied;" whic 2 CONC h was printed with a preface by Benjamin Wadsworth, president of Harvard College, in which h 2 CONC e calls Madame Usher "a wonderful example of Christian Patience under great Pains and Bodil 2 CONC y Afflictions." The announcement by her executors to her daughter in London of her decease an 2 CONC d funeral, testifies to the public respect felt for her, and a schedule of the personal belon 2 CONC gings of this gentlewoman of the seventeenth century is appended as of interest in this conne 2 CONC ction. 2 CONT To the Rev'd Mr. Thomas Cotton in London. 2 CONT BOSTON, June 12, 1723. 2 CONT Mr. THOMAS COTTON, SIR, - These are to condole with you the loss of our worthy friend Mada 2 CONC m Bridget Usher, who departed this life the 25th of the last Month, being Saturday at about t 2 CONC wo a Clock in the afternoon, after a fortnights Indisposition, and according to her express d 2 CONC esire was Intere'd at Brantry May 30th, in the Grave of Dr. Leonard Hoar her first husband, a 2 CONC nd her younger Daughter Tryphena, and the Doctrs. Thomas Cotton. In the litigation between Samue 2 CONC l Sewall, Esq., as attorney for Mrs. Bridget Usher, and Wait Winthropp, Esq., it was necessar 2 CONC y to prove the marriage of her daughter, and the following certificate was obtained from Engl 2 CONC and, and can be found in Massachusetts Archives, Vol. xiii. 22, 23. An interesting memoir of Thomas Cotton is in Walter Wilson's "His 2 CONC tory of the Dissenting Churches," Vol. iv., p. 376-388, to which a portrait is appended. He w 2 CONC as born at or near Wortley in 1653 and was therefore at his marriage more than double the ag 2 CONC e of his girl bride. He died in 1730, aged 77 years, and was buried in Bunhill Fields. His wi 2 CONC ll mentions children: Leonard, Thomas and Alicia, and was proved August 11, 1730. His son Leo 2 CONC nard came to America, was a teacher at Hampton Falls, N. H., and had four children. Judge Sew 2 CONC all mentions paying him a legacy of fifty pounds after his grandmother Usher's death. Thoma 2 CONC s Cotton was a benefactor of Harvard College, between 1724 and 1727, to the amount in all o 2 CONC f 500£. given for books and the increase of the president's salary. He and his wife also auth 2 CONC orized Judge Sewall to distribute 125£. from Madam Usher's estate among poor clergymen of Ne 2 CONC w England. He has descendants living in England, one of whom, Colonel Cotton of the British a 2 CONC rmy has inherited two family portraits of great interest; one of Lord John Lisle, supposed t 2 CONC o be from the brush of Sir Peter Lely, the other of his granddaughter Mrs. Bridget (Hoar) Cot 2 CONC ton, presumed to be the work of Sir Godfrey Kneller. The name Alice Lisle is perpetuated amon 2 CONC g the daughters of the line. Judge Sewall records in his Letter Book II. 151. under date Jul 2 CONC y 8, 1723, memoranda of a letter:- To Mrs. Tryphena Grove in London þ Mr. James Allen, incl 2 CONC osing her Ring which cost 1£. 13. 10. Ordered him to advise with Mr. Newman. 2 CONC If the portraits thus mentioned are in existence their location is unknown to the family. Mad 2 CONC ame Grove died in 1725. JOANNA HOARE, the youngest child of Charles and Joanna of Glouceste 2 CONC r, was baptized at St. Michaels in June, 1624. She married July 26, 1648, Col. Edmund Quincy 2 CONC , third of that name, of Braintree. He was born in England in 1627, and died at Braintree, Ja 2 CONC nuary 7, 1698. Judge Sewall wrote in his Diary, "Seventh-day, Jan'y 8. between ten and 11.m 2 CONC . Parmiter comes in, and tells me that Uncle Quinsey died between 7 and 8 last night. A tru 2 CONC e New England man, and one of our best friends is gon."
