This site is devoted to Bayes Genealogy, with the emphasis on people called Bayes in the United Kingdom, (but also with links to various branches of my own family).

I had the great fortune to have been born in the historic City of Worcester.  Here is a view of the beautiful old Cathedral and the Bridge over the River Severn.

Bayes Family Exhibition
Opened on Friday, 9th May 2008 at Todmorden Community Centre, an exhibition of 137 illustrations celebrating the work of this talented family.  This will be open for two weeks after which it will be displayed elsewhere.  Most of the illustrations are photographs of paintings, sculptures, etc. made by the family.

Blue Plaque Blue Plaque unveiled at Gilbert Bayes' house in London.
On 10th December 2007, the Sculptor Gilbert Bayes (1872-1953), was honoured when this Blue Plaque was unveiled at his former home at 4 Greville Place, St John's Wood, London NW6.

BAYES   Thomas: Thomas Bayes was a Farmer at Morton, near Gainsborough, Lincs. and later a Publican at the Bridge Inn, Dunham on Trent, Notts.  His wife was called Elizabeth. 
(They may have originated in Whitby in North Yorkshire).

BAYES  James:
Thomas' son, James was born in Morton, near Gainsborough, Lincs. in 1813.  James lived in Dunham on Trent, Notts., then nearby Newton on Trent, Lincs. after about 1836-1838.  He died there in 1893.
WATMAUGH   Frances:  Born Fledborough, Notts., (or at nearby Dunham on Trent), in 1816 and died 28th May 1878.  Frances married James Bayes on 31st January 1836 at Dunham.  She was the daughter of Ann (1794-1863) and Grandaughter of Richard and Frances Whatmoor of Dunham.
(The spelling of Watmaugh in the records is wonderfully variable).
BATES   Sarah: Born at Guyhirn, Cambs. c.1827, daughter of Joseph Bates. 
Sarah
moved to Worksop in Nottinghamshire, with her daughter Mary Jane, sometime between 1851 and 1854.  Sarah married Thomas Dodgson in Worksop on 26th December 1854.  She died in Worksop in 1904. 
BATES   Mary Jane: Born in Wisbech, Cambs. on 14 November 1850, married George Bayes, (b. 1843, Newton on Trent, son of James Bayes), at Worksop Methodist Chapel in 1876.   They only had 10 years of marraige, as George died in 1886.  She died in Worksop in 1907.
WOODHALL   Henry: Born in Newark, Notts., 5 April 1845.  Married Mary Walker in Sheffield in 1863.  Died in Sheffield in 1887.

WALKER   Mary: Born in Gainsborough, Lincs., 1st June 1845.
WHITAKER   Thomas Priestley:  Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, 2 July 1838, son of Edmund Whitaker and Mary (nee Priestley).
SHELDON   John:  Born 1743, christened at Leeds, married Hannah Rothwell in 1777.  Their Great Grandaughter, Eliza Sheldon married T.P.Whitaker at St. Peter's,  Leeds in 1860.
PLATT   Robert Father of my grandfather John Platt, (born 1879, Waterfoot, Lancs). 
Robert Platt was born c.1850, Saddleworth
TWEEDALE   Ellen Wife of Robert Platt and Mother of John Platt.  She was born 1850, in Bury, Lancs.  Daughter of Jacob Tweedale, b.c.1819, and Sarah (née Birch), b.c.1823, also both of Bury, Lancs.  The Tweedales hailed originally from Almondbury, Yorks. via  Spotland, part of Rochdale, Lancs. See my Tweedales web page.  This takes Ellen's ancestors back to the 14th Century!
STANSFIELD Family:  Lived at Cowpe, near Rawtenstall, Lancs., (Holden Clough in 1857 and Lowerfold Farm in 1881).  See my Stansfields web page.
BUCKLEY   Edmund:  Born Saddleworth, Yorks. about 1826.  Night watchman at Cowpe Mill in 1881.
WEBB   William Henry Joseph: Born Greenwich, Kent, 6 July 1813, forefather of a succession of five more consecutive William Webbs in following generations.  For further info on this Webb family, go to W-W-Webbs.
CARR   Margaret: Married William H. J. Webb, born Deptford, Kent, about 1818, daughter of  Matthew Carr and Elizabeth (nee Rehm).  See W-W-Webbs
REHM  Elizabeth Born 1791, Deptford, daughter of Joseph Rehm and Rebecca (nee Robjent).  Married Matthew Carr 6 Jan 1813, St. Alphage, Greenwich.   See W-W-Webbs.
KEIR   James: Born Woolwich, Kent about 1847.  Some time Landlord of The Olive Branch, a Public House in Greenwich.  His Mother, Catherine, was born c.1823 in the West Indies.  See W-W-Webbs
BROWN   Charlotte: Born Woolwich, Kent about 1862.  See W-W-Webbs
CHALCRAFT   Harry: Born c.1891, son of Charles Chalcraft, both born Sundridge in Kent and Grandson of Henry Chalcraft, b.c.1829, Hawley, Kent.  See my Chalcrafts web page.
MALLOWS  Alice Maud : Born c.1871 Westminster, London;  her Father was John Mallows.
TITCHENER  Alice Annie: Alice Annie Titchener, born 30 Sep 1891, Sevenoaks, Kent. Daughter of James Titchener and Alice Emma (née Lawrence).  
I've just found out that the Lawrence family hailed from near Crewkerne in Somerset.
