| CUMBERNAULD CHESS CLUB | ||||||||||
Cumbernauld Chess welcomes young people along to the club and has adults willing to share their experience and skills in a number of different ways. If you are interested in learning to play chess then you are welcome to come along on a Wednesday evening between 7 pm and 9 pm where Derek McAteer provides weekly coaching sessions. If your parents would like to stay and learn as well they are welcome to do so.
The club also has a number of teams for which you can play including a junior team and teams in the lower divisions of the Glasgow League which although they include adults are usually people learning the game just like yourself. The great thing about chess is that no matter what age you are you get to compete on an even playing field and we quite often see juniors beating players much older than themselves.
We could have put the basic rules and some coaching information here, but why reinvent the wheel. Instead we have included some links to popular sites that will get you started with your online learning. If you have anything you want added to the page as a youth member then simply email us at: webmaster@cumbernauldchess.co.uk and we will get it published.
Chesskids.com is a great site with some excellent lessons from the basics of the game to openings and chess puzzles.
The Peter Walker chess coaching page also has a structured series of lessons which should get you well on the path to mastering the game.
Barnet Elizabethan Chess Club has a whole lot of goodies, including a chess server where you can play chess online as well as a great range of learning material for you to use.
Exeter Chess Club and it's coaching page is one of the best on the web. With a huge variety of material, most of which can be down loaded, you will never be left without something to study. the wacky videos of the Chess Show are something else!
And of course don't forget Chess Scotland's own junior page found at ChessScotland.com and click on the CSJUNIORS in the left hand column.
Finally if you prefer paper resources have a look at the library page and if there are any books you fancy having a look at then please ask at the club and we will lend them to you.
