View of Castello

Castello is a traditional medieval hamlet on a hillside overlooking valleys, hills and mountains, terraced vineyards and olive groves, and wooded slopes with picturesque villages. It is 16 km from the walled city of Lucca and only an hour’s drive from Pisa airport. There are daily scheduled flights from the UK. You need a car to get to Castello, unless you are extremely energetic! Castello is at the end of a winding mountain single-track road above the village of Valdottavo, a distance of just over 2 km. It is off the tourist track but an excellent base from which to visit a variety of wonderful places.

Our three-storey home - Number 7 Castello - has been carefully restored in recent years to provide modern self-catering accommodation and facilities. Original features have been retained wherever possible and most of the rooms have Tuscan terracotta tiles and beamed ceilings. All windows have internal shutters and mosquito net blinds. In front of the house there is a half-roofed terrace incorporating a log store and a stone paved patio area. The house has full central heating and is comfortably equipped for four guests. A travel cot and booster chair are available for children under three.

Through the glazed front door there is a comfortably furnished sitting/dining room with three piece suite, tiled dining table and six chairs. Opposite the front door is the original bread oven.

The kitchen

The well equipped kitchen is modern with traditional wooden doors, marble effect work surfaces and a wood burning stove. It has a double sink, electric oven, dual fuel hob (electric and gas), microwave with quartz grill, fridge, electric kettle and toaster. There is all the cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils you need.

Stairs from the kitchen lead to the first floor landing with Italian Liberty coloured glass doors to the bedroom and bathroom and a shuttered window. The bathroom has a bath, shower, wash basin, toilet and washing machine. On the landing are linen chests, a full length mirror and fitted wardrobe.

The main bedroom

The main bedroom has a king sized bed, a spacious wardrobe and plenty of drawer space. The floors and beamed ceilings have terracotta tiles and the two bedroom windows provide beautiful views to the front of the house.

From the landing, the staircase winds up to the top floor with the second bedroom. It has twin beds, fitted wardrobe, under bed storage and bed side cabinets. There is also an en-suite room with shower, wash hand basin and a traditional “vaso di notte”. Two windows give views to the rear and the front of the house.

When you book we give you full directions to Castello and we can help with routes for those who wish to travel by car from the UK. In our comprehensive in-house notes we provide information on what to do in the area – local walks, drives and excursions (too many to catalogue here) and where to eat. We complement this with leaflets for you to take with you on your days out and maps and directions to help you find your way. Our bookcase has a wealth of information on the many attractions within driving distance - the lovely cities of Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Siena; the nearby Mediterranean resorts like Viareggio and Massa; the Carrara marble quarries; the Cinque Terra with its quaint seaside towns and villages; Borgo a Mozzano with its ancient Devil’s Bridge, and Bagni di Lucca a favourite spa resort in the 19th century with excellent outdoor swimming pools – just to name a few! For the golfer there are very good golf courses at Forte dei Marmi and Castelfalfi both of which are under an hour’s drive from Castello and for the skier the ski resort of Abetone is just over an hour from Castello.
