What is Scouting all about?

The Scouting movement started as an experimental camp for 20 boys from different backgrounds under the auspices of a British Army Officer, Sir Robert Baden-Powell in 1907 with a view to encouraging responsible citizenship amongst young men. The programme consisted of games, sports and other activities. The experiment was a success, and nearly a century later, Scouting is a thriving international movement for boys and girls with well over 25 million members in 210 countries!

The aim of Scouting is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities

Cub Scout leaders are called "Akela". The leadership is voluntary, but the Scouting Association provides training.

Cub Scout Laws etc

"I promise I will do my best, to do my duty to God and to the Queen, to help other people and to keep the Cub Scout Law."

The Cub Scout Law:

The Scout Motto:

What do we do?

We play all sorts of games including quiet thoughtful games and quizzes as well as loud and energetic running around games!

As well as games, though, we work for Activity badges (the Cub Scout handbook covers everything from Artist to World Conservation!) We also follow an eight-point programme:

[1] Outdoor scouting, [2] Sports and Hobbies, [3] Helping others, [4]Looking after yourself, [5] Science and Nature, [6] Creativity, [7] Your Community, [8] Countries and Cultures +Sharing Together +Helping to Lead

There are a number of Challenge badges which cover each of these areas, which have to be completed over the boys' and girls' three year stay in Cub-Scouts before they hopefully go up to Scouts at age 10.
