My Life Story

This is mainly a
'resume' of my education and career since that seems to be the
way one must define oneself!
If you are also interested in me as a person (i.e. my personal or
spiritual life), please also read my 'testimony'

My name is Sharon Mortemore. I was born in London and grew up in Watford, Hertfordshire, England in 1971. I went to Warren Dell 'Junior mixed Infants' school in South Oxhey and then Westfield School for Girls in West Watford. In 1984 my family moved to Stanmore, Middlesex and I changed schools to Canons High School in Edgware.

By the time I left school at 16, I couldn't take any more of it, so I dropped out of College (I had a place at a sixth form college in Harrow - I think it was probably Green Hill - but I never made it to the first day...) and was advised by Harrow Council's Careers adviser to go on the worst YTS (Youth Training Scheme) he could find: a secretarial course at a so-called college called ADM in Harrow, and did some 'on-the-job training' at Bejam Freezer Food Centres on Honeypot Lane, Stanmore. My immediate boss was Carol who was very nice.
I actually really liked working at Bejam (which is sadly no more), but after a year of £16 a week slavery I got a 'proper' job as a typist at The Salvation Army National Headquarters in London in the 'Special Efforts' Section of the Field Department. I shared an office with a nice lady Officer called (Captain?) Fay Lewis, and our boss was Major Wall.

I then moved on to a word processing (glorified typist) position in the Planned Maintenance Section of the Property Department. I had two immediate bosses Roy Bullock and a nice lady whose name I can't remember, and their boss was the Lt. Col. Smith.

After that I moved on to a VDU job at Wates Built Homes in Norbury (I can't remember the name of the boss, but I was working with a good friend, Gary) followed by what I thought was a very elevated position as "Secretary to the Director" of WBH Financial Services alongside Sarah Cannon, Peter Tarr (Creepy Turtle; which, by the way was a term of endearment!) and the infamous Beverly Woollard... At the time I was living first in Waddon near Croydon and then in Upper Norwood.
I then moved back to The Salvation Army in 1990, this time to Territorial Headquarters as a Secretary to the Chief Surveyor in the Surveyors Section of the Property Department alongside Peggy Baumber. My immediate boss was John Mann. Sadly John Mann was made redundant but David Rice was subsequently made Chief Surveyor. The other Surveyors were Susan Lio, Michael Baumber and Geoffrey Nunn. The Head of the Property Department was Colonel Colin Logan.

In 1995 I went on Maternity Leave to have my first son, Tommy (at which time I was living in St. Albans) and returned part-time when he was six months old in the May of 1996. In the September of the same year, I left to begin my full time degree course in Scandinavian Studies at UCL (University College London, a college of London University).
Having completed the second year 'year abroad' of my degree, (the year abroad was based in the Institutionen för Nordiska Språk at Stockholm University, my degree is 'on hold' since I am living in Milton Keynes which is where my partner, Mark, is working for GEC. It is my hope that I may at some point be able to return to my degree course, but for the time I am 'employed' as house-wife, mother and homeschool teacher!
