Introduction
Going through this list, I am amazed at how
many resources are available to home educators. Of course, if you
have a fortune available to spend, you could certainly amass a
wealth of educational books from these sources, but on my meagre
homeschool budget, it would probably take me a hundred years to
get all the books I would like to buy!
Recommendations for educational
"freebies" or sources of cut-price
educational materials would therefore be most welcome!
You will find my recommendations for
resources and suppliers specific to particular subjects on the
subject pages, but the following companies provide a selection of
subject materials and general educational/ parenting books and
resources to help you with home education.

In the UK
- Christian
Educational Resources This is a lovely
catalogue which includes a small selection of some of the
items available from some of the US catalogues below,
including parenting helps as well as resources for
individual subjects. Send a stamped, SAE to 'Hananeel',
Otterhill Farm, Rowtown, Addlestone, Surrey, KT15 1HD.
- Grace
Educational Materials (formerly of the Cedar
Christian school in London) offer a small range of
Christian teaching materials. Send a stamped, SAE to: GEM
Books, 151 Halley Road, Forest Gate, London E7 8DX for
their latest catalogue, or e-mail GEMbooks@learnzone.freeserve.co.uk
- Family
Resources (also of the Cedar School) produce
a small selection of Christian educational guidelines for
individual subjects, as well as a selection of useful
pamphlets on parenting, education and motherhood. Send a
stamped, SAE to: Family Resources, 123 Claremont Road,
Forest Gate, London E7 0PY.
- HERO Books:
"Home Education Reading Opportunities" This is
a friendly, UK based home educating family mail-order
company which stocks a small selection of some of the
(mainly non-Christian) books available in American
catalogues and others written by UK authors. Does not
carry curriculum or subject books as it seems to have an
Unschooling slant. HERO.Books@dial.pipex.com
- Usborne
Publishing produce a huge range of books,
covering almost every subject, which are very well suited
to home educating. Write to: Usborne Publishing Ltd.,
Usborne House, 83 Saffron Hill, London, EC1N 8RT.
- Dorling
Kindersley books: produce a wide range of books
well suited to home educating. Their
"eyewitness" series is particularly popular.
Write to: Dorling Kindersley, 9 Henrietta Street, Covent
Gardens, London WC2E 8PS.
- The
playgroups association, Pre-school Learning
Alliance publish a useful selection of
guidelines in their "Learn Through Play"
series. For a copy of their Publications & Teaching
Resources catalogue, send a stamped, SAE to Pre-school
Learning Alliance, Mailing House, 45-49 Union Road,
Croydon, CR0 2XU. Be aware, though, that most of their
literature is aimed at playgroups and nursery schools as
opposed to home educators.
- GLS
Dudley "educational supplies
nationwide" is an incredible, massive catalogue
(nearly 800 pp) aimed at schools, from pre-school to
secondary age. They don't really have many books at all,
but they do supply consumables such as paper, pens,
exercise books and so on, as well as toys, games and
learning materials. Write to GLS Dudley Ltd., 1 Mollison
Avenue, Enfield, EN3 7XQ.

From the US
One of the beauty of the internet has been
the ability to discover the incredible resources availble to
homeschoolers in America, where the homeschooling movement is
enormous.
All of the following companies are
themselves home-educating Christian families:
- The Elijah Company: supplies
mainly Christian homeschooling teaching materials and
books. Their catalogue has masses of really useful and
interesting information about the different homeschooling
methods, reasons to homeschool & lists of books on
homeschooling classified according to the different
methods. http://www.elijahco.com
- Greenleaf Press: supplies
books according to subject (mainly history) and including
"creation science". Similar to the Elijah
catalogue in terms of format, and of the books they
provide, but with less information. Nevertheless, a very
good selection and a lovely colour catalogue. http://www.greanleafpress.com
- Another
very good resource for history is "Beautiful
Feet Books" (link to follow)
- Sonlight
Curriculum: An interesting Christian
homeschool curriculum which I have found (but not tried
out). I found their catalogue a very interesting read,
but I appreciate that some might find it a little
'o.t.t.' at first. If you read further, though, they have
some very good material and I do actually support much of
what they say. Although they do seem to use a
'traditional textbook approach', employing teaching
manuals, 'readers' and suchlike, they also make
considerable use of literature. http://www.sonlight-curriculum.com
- Keepers of the Faith: the
"Good Things for your Family" catalogue is a
wonderful resource for Christian home educating families.
They stock inspirational Christian literature, especially
biographies, as well as resources for a myriad of crafts
in keeping with badges for the Keepers of the Faith
Christian family/ youth clubs: "Contenders of the
Faith" and "Keepers at Home".
- Timberdoodle Co.: if
you're looking for 'hands on' kits for art, craft,
science or technology, to mention but a few, this is the
place to look! Plus much, much more.
