WETLAND COLEOPTERA

Thompson Common and its pingo systems hold many nationally rare species of wetland coleoptera. Some of these are scarce right across Europe and others have only been added to the British list within the last few decades. Because the pingos are usually very shallow, they are unsuitable for the larger water beetle species and for the various whirligigs whose larvae require deep, richly oxygenated water. The locally occurring or nationally scarce species most probably owe their presence in the pingos to the undisturbed post-glacial history of Thompson Common.
