HISTORY

In January 30th
1904 the local paper said in their report titled "Amateur
Photography." "Considerable interest is now taken in
photography in the district and there are several photographers of no
mean attainment in the town. The question of forming a local
photographic association has been mooted and there seems every reason to
think such a society would fill a useful purpose." They went on to
say that Mr Herbert Grange, The Camera Club was duly formed and in May of the same year a meeting was held in the Market House and the new society was called The Tring and District Camera Club. The Herald of May 21st 1904 records " The Hon. Chas. Rothschild, who practices photography, was elected president, Mr Herbert Grange vice president and Mr Frank Grace treasurer." Mr Frank Grace was, of course, a prolific photographer and it is his photographs of old Tring that survive to this day. It is interesting to note that a committee member was Mr W.H. Huckvale, whose architect father, Mr William Huckvale, shaped the appearance of Tring by designing so many of the buildings, including the Rose and Crown and the Market House.
The Camera Club held its first successful exhibition on Wednesday November 30th when classes were well supported, the architecture class having 62 entries. A silver and bronze medal were awarded in each class and it was perhaps not surprising that Mr Frank Grace won a silver medal in the class for lantern slides. The bronze medal in that class was won by Mr J. L. Clement, the local jeweller and clock and watchmaker, who was also a keen photographer and local historian.
At about the same time photography was used extensively to record local views to make picture post cards. Well known photographers in this field were Mr J T Newman, also a Camera Club member, Mr C Howlett, proprietor of the King Street Post Office and stores and Mr H Humphrey. Their cards still exist in many collections of postcards. It would appear that the Camera Club did not last for many years. The last recorded meeting in the Bucks Herald of March 3rd 1906 says " The last of a series of interesting demonstrations organised by this club during the winter sessions was given on Friday February 3rd by Mr Green (of Messrs JJ Griffin and Sons, Queensway, London) The subject was "Velox and its New Applications".
Tring Camera Club was, however, revived in1960 by Donald Reed of Reed Photography, formerly in Akeman Street, Tring. The club now meets in the Red Cross Hall Tring, situated adjacent to the Frogmore Street Car Park at the back of St Peter & St Paul Church. Meetings are held on Thursday evenings, commencing at 8.00pm.
