HOTH
Hoth is one of the most inhospitable and
desolate places in the galaxy, where the average daytime temperature is a perishing - 32
degrees, and at night it can get an extra 30 degrees below.
It is the sixth planet in the system of the same name, and
circles a blue-white sun. Its native creatures include Tauntons, which feed on fungus in
the caves, and its predator the Wampa.
The planet has many frozen geysers and a spectacular 1,000kilometre chasm in the south. After the Alliance left the Battle of Yavin (ANH) they came to Hoth to hide from the Empire and set up camp in a series of caves, but they had trouble coping with the extreme temperatures and Wampa attacks.
When they were discovered by the Empire a battle ensued and the Alliance suffered major losses when AT-ATs attacked their Echo Base.
Afterwards the Empire left a garrison and detention centre there for several years. It was eight years after the Battle of Endor that a big game hunter came looking for the valuable pelts from the Wampa. The landing crew's ship was destroyed on landing though and Luke Skywalker and Callista were sent to rescue them.
Beyond Hoth lays a perilous asteroid belt, which makes the planet even less accessible.
