TATOOINE
Tatooine is a remote, desolate, desert planet, based on the Outer Rim of the galaxy. It is also home to various smugglers and pirates though, as it is an important trade route.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin and Luke Skywalker, three of the most powerful Jedi Knights to have ever lived, had their homes on the planet.
Tatooine orbits double stars near Ryloth and Piroket and is a strategic location for hyperspace routes, and has been host to several major battles between smugglers and gangs. Jedi Knight Dace Diath lived there 4,000 years before the Galactic Civil War.
There are two native species, the fearsome Tusken Raiders, known as Sand People, and the scavanging Jawas.
Other animals include Banthas, Dewbacks, Rontos, Womp Rats, Dune Lizards and the dreaded Sarlaac.
Tatooine is home to the Krayt Dragon, famed for its priceless stones. Many of the planet's inhabitants work on moisture farms which condense water from the air.
Among the well-known locations are the Dune Sea, the Jundland Wastes, Anchorhead, Mos Espa and Mos Eisley.
Mos Eisley, described by Ben Kenobi as "a wretched hive of scum and villany" is the largest city.
Several centuries ago the exiled monks of the B'omarr order built a monastry but that was taken over by the bandit Alkhara for 34 years. Eventually Jabba the Hutt took over, until his death at the hands of Princess Leia.
The monks carried on living in the base of the palace, their brains removed and placed in jars as they tried to reach enlightenment.
Anakin Skywalker was a slave on the planet until he helped Qui-Gon Jinn and was freed to be trained as a Jedi Knight. However his mother Shmi remained.
Obi-Wan Kenobi later fled to Tatooine to escape the Emperor's purge of Jedi Knights. When Anakin Skywalker's son was born, he was sent to Obi-Wan's brother - Owen Lars- and Luke Skywalker was brought up there away from the clutches of the Empire.
Luke met Obi-Wan and left to become a Jedi after Owen and his wife Beru were killed. He returned to rescue his friend Han Solo from the hands of the vile gangster Jabba.
