I receive many WERSI queries, which from the sheer load of mail, sometimes get unanswered. For this I can only apologise.

I have been intending to write a FAQ page for WERSI for a few years now, but with the hundreds of queries I receive, I have always shed away from doing it. I have finally put pen to paper, or at least "hands to keyboard" and attempted to remedy the situation. I've gone through year 1999 queries, and am working my way through year 2000, only another 5 years to go.

I hope with a FAQ page, many of your queries will be answered, and Iighten my in-tray a bit.

It will be a bit messy until I collate and clean up the answers. Many of the queries here are historical so addresses and phone details shown may no longer be applicable.

Q

Where are your contact details? How does someone find more information or join? Any links?

A

If you don't see a Navigation bar, you probably found me via a search engine and have displayed a frames page out of context. Go to my home page and try again.

Q

Yours is one of those irritating sites that once you open it you can't close it again without closing the browser and starting from scratch

A

I used to run an automatic check on my visitors browser level and monitor size, to direct them to pages that matched their system.
It meant that I had to produce more web pages, while irritating my visitors for the reasons above. The disadvantages probably outweighed the benefits, so I have discontinued the practice.

Q

Your German translations are terrible.

A

A lot of my viewers are from Germany, which is the reason I first made the site dual language. I had to use software translators as I don't speak German myself, retranslating back to English as a double check..
With comments like the above, the German pages were a waste of time, so I have removed the pages

Q

I like the interactive Table to the left of the photo. I could not detect much difference between your site's behaviour on Freeserve or AOL. However, on AOL the early notice "click here if this doesn't disappear within 5 secs" seemed reluctant to show. Sometimes not at all, usually delayed (10-15 secs I guess). Your site is particularly good since it is not at all long winded in showing, like many sites are these days. Good stuff!

A

Thanks for the info about my web site, I had noticed when I looked on some PC's that my "click here" message takes a long while to go, while on my PC at home its a case of there it was gone! I don't know what's for the best. If you click on it, it assumes you have a level 3 browser and takes you to my alternate site, that then loads - decides you really had a level 4 after all and takes you there to load all over again, by which time people would get p------d off. If I change the message to say wait 10 secs I can see people still getting fed up. I might change it to say:- click here for level 3.... here for level 4, but it's a bit silly when the software should do it anyway.
I have since removed this feature. I doubt there are many level 3 browers still in use..

I've gone full circle on my webs now, I originally wrote all my pages using wordpad, then progressed to MS Front page, going on to using MM's Dreamweaver. I still want to produce scripts that are beyond the capability of Dreamweaver so it's back to wordpad again.

Q

I enjoy your web site it brings back a lot of memories. Do you have a picture of the WERSI DX-10

A

You can find pictures of past and current WERSI organs on my Instruments pages

Q

Who owns the WERSI Company?

A

See "History". I was asked this question many times, so I have added my response to the navigation bar.

Q

I am trying to find who stocks the keyboards.

A

The world wide web is a big place, so if you don't say which country you are from, I won't be able to help. My links page shows some of the main WERSI agents. Or go to WERSI.com and click on "Kontacts"

Q

I would like catalogues of WERSI organs, how can I buy CD's of Claudia Hirst and Mark Whale

A

As I state on my home page "I have no commercial connection with either THOMAS Musik or WERSI Music Productions," My links page lists WERSI dealers.

By Claudia Hirst? I presume you mean Claudia Hirschfeld? CD's
There are a number of companies that market records by Claudia Hirschfeld and Mark Whale as well as other WERSI artists.
One company in the UK is : -

Q

I have been desperately searching for information on my old Thomas electronic organ. It is approximately vintage 1959. I'm not acquainted with WERSI, but saw some references to the Thomas organ on your home page. Can you help me?

A

I do not know if the Thomas Musik Germany, that manufacture organs under the Thomas Label have any connection with your own instrument of 1959 vintage.
Thomas Musik give the following two contacts in Florida.
adap Team USA L.L.C., Chris Brackenbury, 4149 Seaton Circle, Palm Harbour, Florida.
Southeast Keyboards, Inc., Gary Grimes, 2190 J.Anderson Drive, Ormond Beach, Florida

Q

Can you tell me is there a Wersi Organ dealer in Central Pennsylvania. I live in Camp Hill and would be interested in trading my Technics GA3 Organ for a Wersi. I have always wanted to own one. I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you!

A

The sound produced by WERSI organs is second to none, but may prove harder to play than your Technics. I don’t know if there are any agents in Pennsylvania. The original founders of WERSI formed a new company called WERSI Music Production in Germany (Their products are also marketed in the USA under the brand name of “Blue Chip”), whilst meanwhile the old WERSI company was bought out by Thomas. Thomas now market the old WERSI series under the Thomas label, whilst the new WERSI Music Production company is bringing out a new range of WERSI organs under their own label. Both German companies are in the process of building up overseas agents.

I have owned Prisma DX5TL, KEY FOX 20, MR64, and now the PEGASUS PLUS. today there are no WERSI importers in Israel, and/or services. I have some problems with some of the buttons. and the pitch wheel varies the pitch only at the last point's and not as it has to be in the normal condition. Some times the instrument locks and doesn't play. I don't feel safe to give it to an electronic technician who has no any knowledge about this organ. It can be difficult to sell the Pegasus to someone without telling them that there are no services of the company in the country. I would like to send it to you for repair, but the cost is prohibitive. I wish to purchase a brand new organ. do you have any demo of the DA VINCHI that you can send to me please? I'd like to know if it could be possible to make a trade in deal when i'll purchase a new organ of the wersi's new gallery.

I have no commercial connection with WERSI myself, I run a web site on WERSI to assist owners. WERSI went bought up by Thomas Music. This company has continued marketing the latest range of WERSI instruments produced by the original company, under the brand name of Thomas. I am not sure what models were continued. It is quite possible that the Pegasus Plus being one of the later models was, and so therefore I would expect that Thomas music would have full aftersales support and may have agents in Israel.

The DA VINCHI is produced by the new WERSI company formed by previous founders of WERSI and markets under the name of WERSI Music Production. This company has been in existance for about two years now. I am not certain if the Da Vinchi is on the market yet as there were some technical problems. These may be sorted out by now.
Their address at

WERSI Music Production

I hope that is of help and that you are able to get your organ into good working order.

Q

Does anyone have used Slave Boards for WERSI SPECTRA Organ? Need up to three boards to increase Polyphony Note capacity in the one I have.

A

I would suggest you try WERSI at Lancaster and see what they have to Offer.

Q

Is WERSI US still associated with WERSI? It's about a year since I talked to Ralph Conti. I see there is a new WERSI UK linked from WERSI Germany. But no mention of the US. I know Lancaster was struggling, and worse still, Ric left.

A

WERSI USA (Lancaster) are agents for WERSI Music Production. I get a lot of e-mail from the States asking for help in obtaining spare parts and servicing, which I guess would go to Lancaster if they had themselves a web site. I run my web sites as a hobby and not to make any money. WERSI music production show both "Lancaster" and the WERSI UK as agents for them

PS Since writing that 5 years ago, WERSI USA now have a web site. WERSI UK has ceased trading.

Q

I just want to find the information about your OX7 blue chip organ modul. If there's a link that I can easily take a look about this modul please just let me inform.

A

For a brief description of the OX7 you could try the wersi uk site, for more detail you would need to go to the German sites. This gives more detail, but in German. To put it into English of sorts go to Systran select german to english and type the url http://www.wersi.net/ox7.html into the top box.

Q

Hi, I was wondering if I could order a manual to a digital piano of yours

Q

I have a problem about my Wersi Organ. It was given to me when a relative passed away a few years ago and the time has come to sell it. My problem is A)I dont know where to advertise it and B) I dont know what to ask for it. Please could you give me some help. The Organ is a Wersi Phon X and approximately 8 years old. If you have any suggestions could you please mail me

A

Electronic organs are a bit like cars, people part exchange when they buy new ones. Possibly you could try your nearest organ dealer, failing that the Wersi UK site has a free classified section at . Also Organfax has a classified section on bravenet .
I am afraid that I do not know what the current value of a Phon X would be.

Q

I have just purchased a WERSI dx400, what a wonderful instrument. I am looking to join a WERSI club in my area. (UK)

A

I am afraid that the Wersi Enthusiasts Society was discontinued, not so much from lack of support, but there was no-one left willing to take on the job of Editor. Quite a few Wersi owners constructed their own instruments, some of these joined the Organ Constructors Society. Ken Davies runs a Wersi support group as does Roy Scott of Wersi UK. Both Byron Jones the organist and Pincents Promotions often run WERSI weekends with a number of WERSI organists in attendance. You will find contact addresses for most of the above on my links page.

(Pincents Promotions went into liquidation in 1999. Sadly Ken Davies passed away a few years ago.)

Q

I'm trying to find a dealer in California (or nearby) to help me put together two old Wersi kits I have--a Comet and a piano (mid-1980's vintage). Do you know of a dealer?

A

I would suggest you try WERSI at Lancaster and see if they can suggest anyone. I'll put the contact address below. Failing that, if you are able to find someone local to you, say via the pages of an electronic organ mag, I have a number of personal copies of the technical manuals and could photocopy some if needed. That would naturally take time, money and postage. Also I live in the UK so $'s are not that much use so we would have to come to an agreement on this. You will find the manuals I have listed on my manuals pages. Also the Electronic Organ Constructors Society in the UK have a number of spare parts for these organs, see my "Links" page. If you have any luck finding anyone then please let me know I appreciate any feedback, so I can add their contact address to my Links pages. Regards Martin Bates Wersi Lancaster is at:-

Organs for Sale/Buy

Q

I have a WERSI I wish to Sell/Buy

A

I get many e-mails from people wishing to sell or buy their WERSI. If you wish to purchase a new WERSI, then use my links pages to find a local purchaser. If you are a dealer, and not listed, please drop me a line. People often need to sell an inherited instrument as a result of the passing away of an older member of the family. There are a number of options available.

* Local advertising, such as the classified section of your local newspaper or cards on the notice board of a local store.
* Place an ad in the classified columns of one of the Organ magazines
* Part exchange. If you are purchasing a new organ then most sellers will take your old instrument in part exchange.
* Classified columns on websites. If you wish to reach a world market, this is the perfect medium, but not ideally suitable if you wish to sell something locally. Before considering advertising on the web you should read my comments below on classified scams. A number of websites offer classified columns to buy/sell on the web. Examples are freeads , ORGANfax , or net instruments . I would advise against posting e-mail addresses on the web as it attracts e-mail spam. Use sites that allow contact via "forms", as your e-mail address is not made public.
* On line auctions such as eBay.

For classified advertisements the rule must be:
Use an escrow, not an escroc.

Definitions:
Escrow (The purchaser pays the money to a reputable intermediary service. When they confirm that they are satisfied with the goods, the intermediary releases the money to the seller)
Escroc (Con artist)

Use your common sense, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Internet fraud is on the increase, many involve identity fraud, or money theft via auctions and classified ads. Many Internet escrow services are themselves scams. For payment, I advise using a recognised service, such as escrow.com , paypal or bidpay you should not accept moneygrams, overseas cashiers cheques, shipping with refunds bank transfers or similar.

Q

I wish to sell my WERSI, what is a realistic price?

A

I get asked this often. Like all marketing price is governed by supply and demand. For second hand WERSI instruments there are more selling than wish to purchase, technical support for faulty instruments is hard to obtain, although it must be said that in general their reliability is high. Like all hi-tech products devaluation is high.
Having re-read my answer, I note that I never answered the "value" question. The fact is I don't know, it's worth whatever you can get for it. Take a look at the classifieds mentioned above or search for other sellers on your search engine, and you should get an idea.

Q

We have a WERSI Organ here ( Zenith WS3) and it is partially assembled. It was given to us about 7 years ago by the parent of an former student and we thought that we might complete the task of assembly as we have almost all the parts.... maybe even all of the parts. Our problem is that being very realistic we will not complete the task and we were wondering if there were enthusiasts who might like to take this off our hands. Do you know of any group who might be interested.

A

I am afraid that the WERSI Enthusiasts Society has been discontinued owing to there being no volunteers to continue with the task of editing their news letter. You could contact the Electronic Organ Constructors Society. They have a number of members having built WERSI Organs. Their contact is Don Bray in Sussex Tel: 01323-894909. They hold most of the necessary spares for the Zenith, and manuals.
There is a new UK agent for WERSI, that is WERSI UK at Unit 17, 193 Garth Road, Morden, Surrey, SM4 4LZ, Tel: +44 (0)81-330 7766 Fax: +44 (0)81-330 7726. They run a WERSI Club, but I expect more to keep interested parties up to date on new WERSI Products

Q

I am interested in the Wersi DA VINCI GS 700. I want to know if i can still build the organ myself and how do i start doing this,I know a couple of years ago you could buy the kits and assemble the instrument yourself. Thanks for your help, it is my dream to be the owner of a Wersi organ.

A

Wersi no longer produce organ kits.
Modern circuit design does not lend itself to assembly in kit form, the high clock speeds behaving as radio signals. At these frequencies, the printed board connections behave as tuned circuits requiring the components to be surface mounted and accurately placed, this can only be done by machine.
I cannot see why there cannot be a compromise somewhere. On the earlier organ kits the keyboards consisted of hundreds of components. These later came as ready made modules. I would have thought kits of some description were still possible. The Da Vinci is marketed Wersi Music Production. Perhaps now they are back on the Wersi scene they may start up their kits again, who knows.

Q

I have a WERSI Delta DX500 Console Organ for sale if a reasonable offer is made.

A

Some web sites have "For Sale" boards, such as Organfax in the UK, but not much use for selling organs in California, you would need to find one closer to home. I would try the local book shop and see if there are any magazines carrying personal ads.

Q

I have been searching your web site for info on the wersi atlantis model that I saw for sale in the local paper, but cant find any. Could you provide me the info I want?

A

I have brochures on nearly all the WERSI models except that. However you can find a photo and full specification of the Atlantis SN3 on the WERSI UK pages.
These archives have been relocated to the Gallery of older WERSI Models on ORGANfax

Q

at home i have an arcus, a pegasus and a spectra. i am actually trying to seel my arcus because i need money for school. it has livestyle, but not a full pedalboard. it works great still and we have some extra speakers. so i was wondering if you have any idea of anyone who might want to buy it or how much i should ask for it. i wish i didn't have to sell it but at least i can keep the other ones.

A

I felt that there was a lack of support for WERSI in comparison to the likes of Yamaha and Technics on the web, which is why I produced the site. I am afraid that I do not know anyone looking for Arcus. Occasionally I get enquiries as to whether I know of any organs for sale, but not that often. The dealers might help, so you could try your local organ stores, also try the "for sale" columns in the organ magazines.

Q

I am interested in a portable organ so I can play at nursing homes. Could you direct me. I am wondering about used or possibly new. What about the Performer or Vegas? What about cost? Any information would be appreciated.

A

Obviously any second hand portable has normally been used for Gigs and so possibly been knocked about a bit, so you need to give any you find a good look over. The Wersi Enthusiasts Club used to be good to locate second hand organs, so was Wersi Ireland, but they have folded up and with it the mags with the info. I would suggest you try Wersi UK's classified organ section or try Colin Howe whose mobile number you can find on my Link Page.

Q

I require a SC 13 memory board for a Helios S/Comp and some Push button switches, the push push locking type for the S/Comp.
I have just dismantled a Cosmos and have a large number of kits and assd. manuals for sale If you are interested please e-mail me. Barrie Doney restormel -nospam- @eurobell.co.uk

A

The Electronic Organ Constructors Society have a lot of Helios spares, contact Don Bray +44 (0)1323-894909. He had a lot of key switches and may have the memory board, you need to join the EOCS but that is not expensive. I have no need for Cosmos parts personally. If you want me to put an ad on my site, let me know. I have done this on occasion, but the response is not normally that good. Alternatively I believe both the Wersi UK sites and Organfax run buy/sell exchange type pages.

approximately 15 years ago I purchased two wersi 5001 speakers. I have never conntected them and they are in excellent condition. Do you happen to know of anyone who might be interested in purchasing the speakers. I will certainly consider any reasonable offer

I would be pleased to put an ad on my site for you, but I would suggest

Roseville Road,
Fruiteville Pike,
One Block North Off Rt. 30 Lancaster, PA 17601.
you try nearer home. One possibility would be to contact:-

Alternatively you could try one of your local organ stores.

Q

I've got a Wersi Helios W2T. Try as I may I can't get near to the strings sound that Klaus Wunderlich used in many of his recordings. Can you offer any advice please ?

A

For the string-orchestra sound, it is all in the set-up, and Klaus was past master at that. To get the spatial effect, you need reverb, together with WersiVoice bringing in all the harmonics. There are also dip-switches within the sound computer to switch WersiVoice through to both speakers to increase the spatial effect still further. As I don't have a Helios myself, I am not the best one to guide you on the settings. On my "tips" page you will find the string setting advised by Colin Hogarth that may help.
If you need help on the soundcomputer for the Helios, I plan to add the user guide to my pages in the not too distant future.

Q

Where can I obtain a service manual for a Wersi Helios

A

Go to my Manuals page, select "Analogue" then "Helios".

You may download Manuals with a "pdf" icon by right clicking, (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader).
I have Manuals where pages numbers are quoted, but there is no pdf file, I have not had time to copy these yet, but if you can be specific with your problem I will e-mail you the schematics.
I do not have, Manuals if no pages number is quoted, but would be grateful if anyone can lend me a copy.

Q

Where can I obtain a Users manual for a Wersi Helios?
All buttons on my receently acquired instrument are in German!

A

Yours sounds like a common problem for WERSI organ owners. When I built my BETA, I obtained two sets of instructions in English for the BETA, both came from the USA. The first by Bill Horn, the second by Carl R Wischmeyer. I do not know if either of these people have produced written instructions for the Helios, but would consider it worth enquiring.

Q

I would appreciate any documentation, software, hardware etc. that you might have or know how to acquire for the WERSI EX20 that I own. (USA)

A

1. Your best bet would probably be to try Lancaster at:

WERSI Keyboard Systems (Wersi Keyboards and Organs)
Don Gehr 241 W.
Roseville Road,
Fruiteville Pike,
One Block North Off Rt. 30 Lancaster, PA 17601.

2. Failing that, Thomas Organs in Germany took over the old WERSI company, they were starting to build up a network of agents world-wide.

3. COLIN HOWE Wersi Organ Specialist UK Mobile Phone # +44 (0)7970-519906 Holds pretty well all the manuals. Trouble is to get him to actually send you a copy. He always seems to be travelling round the country fixing peoples WERSI organs and never gets round to answering queries.

4. If all else fails, I used to belong to the Wersi Enthusiasts Society in the UK, although no longer in operation I have their mailing list, so I can try to contact other people with EX20's and try to get them to loan me a manual so that I can copy it. It is a bit long winded as I have to try to get perfect strangers to lend me their manuals, pay them for postage, then pay the copying and postage.

Q

I have a WERSI Delta DX 500 T and I am looking for a users manual

A

The best user manual for this organ was written by Bill Horn. (USA)
Alternatively, Illustrated Notes - DX 400/500 Beta, Gamma, Delta Can be obtained from Mr. Carl R. Wischmeyer 1311 Oyster Point Drive Sugar Land, TX, 77478, USA 281-265-7984

I have a part-completed guide for the DX400 here.

Q

My brother owned a WERSI organ with a golden gate (computer?) system attached. He passed away last November. I can't seem to find any documentation on how to use the system. Can you help me?

A

Q

I have a WERSI DX 5 but no operations manual (Australia)

A

I am slowly building up a library of WERSI manuals myself. The closest I have is an operations manual for the DX-10. It is worth trying both Thomas Music and WERSI Music Productions. Although different companies, both are giving some support to previous models. I believe that Eazyplay are agents for Thomas, and WERSI Music Australia are agents for WERSI Music Production.

Q

I just inherited a Wersi special edition organ produced in the 1990's for a Florida store. It has a touch screen computer display, and looks like the CD 900 Gala, but is called the Floridian SKL. Do you know anything about this model, and how I should approach moving, repairs and general upkeep for this instrument. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA, and have seen nothing on the net for this beautiful organ.

A

The Wersi Company in Germany went bankrupt and the rights of manufacture of the last series of organs produced from the Wersi stable were taken over by Thomas Organs. (There is also a New Wersi company formed by the original innovators of Wersi called Wersi Music Production - that is a different company yet again.) Anyway Thomas Organs then marketed Wersi Organs in the States under their own label. The hardware was the same, but the software configuration was changed to what they believed would sell better in the American market. As far as repairs go the original Wersi manuals would suffice as the printed circuit boards etc. are unaltered. I did make up a conversion sheet with the equivalent organ types on it, but I am the worlds most untidyiest person (or so my wife thinks) and I don't know what I did with it. From memory I believe the Floridian was originally the Wersi Rhondo Classic. As I say, that is from memory so you would really require confirmation of this before rushing off and buying the manuals, I would expect the Rhondo Classic Manuals are easier to come by. I do not have any myself.

Q

I see on your spares list 2 Manuals that might interest me.AM390 (Kettle Dums) and AM308/2 (Mic pre amp) Do you have any PCB's and IC's for these 2 units. If you let me know cost of what you have/Manuals I will forward a Cheque on.

A

The manuals you refer to are quite small, 10 pages for the AM390 and 5 for the AM308/2. I therefore scanned them for you and will attach them as pdf files. I am afraid the copies I have are old photocopies when photocopying was not quite up to the standard it is today, so I apologise for the quality. I scanned them in at 300 dpi so if ther's some you can't read, then you probably can't read it on my copy either. The pdf files come to about 700 kB so I will put them on the next e-mail so you know to expect them. For Parts, I don't hold any spares myself. As I said, have a look through the list and if you see anything useful contact Don Bray. You could ask him anyway. Failing that you could try Colin Howe whose mobile phone number you will find on my Links Pages.

Software

Back

Q

I own an upgraded Spectra 700CD and would be interested in swops etc.

A

Swaps are a good way of increasing ones software. I am trying to get my Software pages to take off, but it has been somewhat disappointing, I have had only one offer for software for the DX400 and he never came back to me.
Apart from the data files supplied with new organs, I cannot post original WERSI software which would be defrauding their copyright.
I can happily post sequencing or registrations that are home grown. I notice that the Technics Yamaha and Casio sites are full of software exchange. I've been trying to get one going for WERSI for a number of months now with no success. Hopefully once I start to get some software posted it may cause a chain reaction and induce other people to send more.

PS I discontinued my software pages from lack of support.

Q

I have a WERSI Delta DX 500 T and I am searching software for this organ

A

Loss of the original data is more frequent now as the batteries on the processor board come to the end of their natural lifespan and this data is lost. Often the original tapes will not load as they have deteriorated with age. Zipped files for the Standard Data Cassette and Sounds 6 may be downloaded from my Servicing page. These are data files and not audio, so should be uploaded to the WERSI via the RS232 port.

Q

The software that I have received on my second-hand purchase has a problem. It's on 5 1/4" FDD and came with a Commodore 128 PC. The software is dated, but some of the registrations are working. The sequencing software has errors and so does the "WERSIVOX". I have now come to a halt. What is required is to transfer the data to a modern PC in a language that my Windows PC can understand, and so transfer to a backup device. Any suggestions please.

A

To transfer WERSI data files directly from a PC. You need a Communications package that handles Raw ASCII data, such as ProComm Plus.
Information on connecting the organ to a PC you can get from my connections page.
WERSI initially brought out DX400 software for the Commodore and the Atari. The Commodore software is not directly transposable to a PC. There are trans-compilers for the microprocessor chip used, but the software utilise routines within the computers own ROM for Input/Output to keyboard, monitor, printer etc. which are unique to the Commodore and not easily transposable. One would need to be capable of writing ones own software and have a commented copy of the original software.
I believe the only DX400 software was the WERSI ORGANizer written by Terry Perdue (Seattle, WA) for the PC. Obtainable from WERSI this runs under DOS and was released in 1987.
About ten years ago I did an article for the WES on how WERSI formatted the data for the CX4.

Q

Interested in all aspects of Wersi Instruments & Software, particularly for the PhonX plus series. Any contacts etc. will be useful for an interchange of views, music, dumps etc. Also willing to purchase software if you can supply contacts. Many thanks. P.S. Your address was passed on by Len Steele.

Software for the Phon X :-

1. You may use my software exchange pages. I put them there the purpose of letting WERSI owners exchange software but so far without much of a success. As the internet has world wide access I expected a larger input than I've had so far. One possible deterrent is that I can not risk publishing official WERSI software on the web for fear WERSI were to come down on me like a ton of bricks. If you have any sequences or registrations that you have made up yourself and don't mind sharing you can e-mail me a copy. This would normally require interfacing the instrument to either a MAC or PC via the RS-232 interface, and uploading the rhythm or registrations to. I prefer direct data in preference to MIDI files as there is a vast amount of MIDI already available on the internet.

2. Buy official WERSI software. Links to the WERSI suppliers can be found on my WERSI links page. Firstly WERSI itself at http://www.wersi.de have the following software that I believe runs on the Phon X. I am not aware of anyone who markets these in the UK so you would need to contact them directly if interested.

Tanz Klassiker I,
Best of Organ II,
Copacabana I,
Walzerträume I,
Let's Funky I,
Foxtrott I

Secondly there is WERSI music production run by the Franz family who started WERSI, but sold up a couple of years back, you can enter via their frames page at and click on software, if you did not have frames you could go directly to http://www.wersi.net/software.htm .They have a much larger list with:-

Disks 1-10,
Standard,
Pop,
Lets Swing,
Standard dancing,
Folk Music,
Party Time 1 & 2,
Old Basic,
Lambada,
Hits, Hits … etc,
Also Midi sounds & Drums and Their World of Rhythm Series.

I don't know for certain, but I expect these items can probably be purchased via John Romero at Carillon studios, .
Failing that try Byron Jones or Colin Howe. Contact details again on my links page . Please let me know how you get on. If I have feedback, I will know the answers for the next person who asks the question.

Q

Have you any information, or a source of information on the data format used by Wersi for the DX series. It's easy enough to get the data in and out of a PC, and it would be fun to write a PC program to play with the voices etc. I know Wersi used to sell their own software for this for Commodores, but don't know what happened after that era

A

WERSI produced DX software for the Commodore and the Atari but not for the PC. I never had any information on the software, Ken Davies sent me the 5 1/4" floppy for the Commodore once, but the postman folded it in half to get it through the letter box, so I could not read the disc. I did an analysis on the data format of the CX4 rhythm unit for the DX400 series in 1987 that was published in the WES magazine at the time. I never investigated the DX350 but expect the article I wrote at the time should give a good enough lead. I'm afraid the Epson HX20 I used for this was in no way PC compatible, so the best I can do is to scan my old hardcopy attached (587KB) . Sorry for the file sizes, If I scanned it at a lower res you probably would not be able to read it.

Q

I have a WERSI Nova CD 700.I want to connect a Roland Module through Midi.It has all Pipe Organ Reg.Will I have any problems if I connect to the Midi Out Plug Will it Work Gen. Midi?

A

You will need to connect a standard MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT socket on the CD700 to the MIDI IN on the Roland. You also need to take the Audio output from the Roland, into the TAPE input socket on the CD700 via a suitable audio cable.
It will be necessary to configure the CD700 to output Upper Manual, Lower, Pedal etc. to the appropriate MIDI channels for output (Normally set to 1, 2 and 3 respectively), and to configure the Roland to accept the same channel numbers for MIDI Input.
You will need to consult the User Manuals of both Instruments for this info. If you set registrations on the Roland directly and not via MIDI, then General MIDI will not be an issue. Just ensure when you set up the MIDI parameters on the CD700 that you select MIDI Out Instrument Change to "OFF".
I do not have a users manual for the CD700, so cannot advise on the procedure to configure the MIDI, or answer the question as to if it can be set to Gen. MIDI. If you wish to try changing registration via the WERSI stops, then this may be done by setting "Instrument Change" via MIDI to "On", you can then run along the WERSI stops and note the changes to the Roland.

Q

I would like to make my GALA into a MIDI instrument and receive any MIDI registrations available.

A

You cannot receive registrations (voices) on MIDI. The MIDI commands are a means to remote the organist. The MIDI interface in real time, carries information on what registrations have been selected, the notes played and with what pressure. The organ can be played remotely or the organ may play another instrument remotely.
The registrations come from the instrument being played, so it is necessary when using MIDI, to run a separate cable to carry the audio.
I presume that your query relates to the interface of your Gala to a PC. You need to be aware that the Gala is quite an old instrument, and although having a standard MIDI interface, is not compatible with "General MIDI".
When voices are selected, the MIDI transmits a number to represent the voice selected. General MIDI standardises this, and for the GALA to interface to General MIDI, a software translation must be performed.
Various software allow for sequencing of the organ, printing music scores, make changes etc. within the capabilities of your organs existing registration software. The most widely used software by other WERSI owners is "e-magic". This comes from a German company, and is marketed world-wide, a second popular package is named "Sibelius"

Q

I own a Wersi Gamma 500 and decided this past weekend to be brave and use the MIDI connections. What I want to do is use a Brother Sequencer with the Wersi and record tracks digitally. Ok, my organ skills are not great, so I really want to record the pedal part, then play the manuals along with it during playback. It doesn't work. I tried to follow the steps in the manual to activate the MIDI, but after many many attempts, nothing happened.

A

Like all problem solving, you need to be methodical and eliminate possibles one by one untill the problem is resolved.

1. The physical interface is quite simple and presumably the Sequencer comes with cables so should be no problem. If the Brother is capable of producing its own registrations, then you will need an audio connection as well as MIDI, if it is only used for sequencing this may not be necessary. If possible one needs to prove MIDI output from the WERSI and Brother, to decide which equipment is causing the problem.

2. There are 16 channels in MIDI. Both the WERSI and the Brother have to be set up as to which channel is used for which manual. The original WERSI software was very limited on MIDI, and I think only covered upper manual on Channel 1, lower on 2, pedals on 3 and rhythm on 16. WERSI then brought out a DX4/500 AMS upgrade that enabled any manual to be mapped to any channel. Eitherway you will need to tell the WERSI to enable both the MIDI inputs and outputs on the channels you wish to use. If you think this may be your problem, let me know if you have the AMS upgrade or not and which manuals you wish to map to which channels and I can try to help. Best way may be for me to try it on my BETA and send you the programming steps. I would expect the WERSI to default pedals to channel 3, so in that case you would need to enable MIDI on the WERSI for input and output on channel 3 and the Sequencer to record.

3. If you are using the rhythm unit then you will probably need to enable synchronisation as well, but I would leave synchronisation untill you at least get the channel recording.

Q

FOLLOW UP: The Wersi does have the AMS upgrade. The Brother does not have audio connections. I have used it for several years on a Kurzweil piano.
About a year ago I was able to successfully connect a Korg M3R to the Wersi and use it as a tone generator. At that time I simply followed the steps in the manual. It took many attempts for me to accomplish this, and later, I did not remember exactly what worked and what did not work. I did write out the steps that activated the pedals to Ch. 3: Program-Interface-S-Compute.
The real problem is, I suppose, that I don't understand the technical theory behind the enabling, mapping, and telling the Wersi to do this or that. If we map the channels this way--upper to Channel 1, Lower to Channel 2, and pedals to 3--what would I need to do?
As I just read over your letter, it seems that I have not enabled MIDI at all. So, that is probably my first step.

A

Yes, I understand the problem. Programming the WERSI is anything but user friendly. Once set-up however you can pretty well forget it.

There are three basic things that can be set-up:-

1. MIDI input and output channel allocation. The output is fixed channel 1 to upper manual, 2 to lower, 3 to pedals etc. although it can be enabled or switched off. The input channel i.e.. from your sequencer can be allocated to any channel. Also enabled or switched off

2. Mapping of instruments to registration numbers

3. Setting up the synchronisation

If we start with the channel set-up, this is done as follows:-

Press Program, Interface,"W", Compute
Here you can select the output channel you wish to enable or the input channel to be mapped. using the W-E-R-S keys
(Left to itself it cycles through all 16 channels in sequence starting with channel 1 to upper manual, after you have pressed "compute" twice more to map input channels and switching)

Press Compute
Now you set the input channel off or map the input channel to the required manual

Press Compute
Now you switch the Output channel on or off.

Press Compute
and you are back to select a new channel or Press Program to exit.

______________________________________________
Thus to allocate the pedals input and output to channel 3:-

Press:-
Program
Interface
W (Select Channel 3 for input and pedal manual to output on channel 3)
Compute
E (Map Channel 3 from the sequencer to pedals)
Compute
S (Enable the pedals to output on channel 3)
Compute (Would then continue in sequence to let you set up channel 4)
Program (Exit)

Q

Hello, I am a Pegasus owner, and I was wondering perhaps if you knew of a general midi initialization file or disk that can be used to set up the pegasus so that it can properly play back General MIDI files with the proper instrument maps and so on. Pegasus users are few and far between, and I've been trying to find other users that I can talk with and maybe even share things with that relate to the Pegasus. Also is it easy to use the Pegasus with a MIDI sequencer such as cakewalk? I would like to be able to sequence with my Pegasus using Cakewalk pro Audio 9.0, but I don't know if there is any way to get instrument maps for Cakewalk for the Pegasus.

A

The answer to all your questions should be "yes"
1. General Midi for the Pegasus is available on disk. I do not know myself where you would obtain it in Canada, but if you find out from other sources then you could let me know for the benefit of anyone else with a similar query.
I telephoned Colin Howe who does WERSI repairs here in the UK, and he says that he could supply you with a disk. You would need to contact him directly. He is only available on his mobile as he is normally travelling round the country fixing WERSI organs. His mobile number is +44 (0)7970-519906.
2. Pegasus owners? again I only have contact names in the UK and not Canada, so possibly not a lot of use to you, and I do not know who if any have e-mail as I only have names addresses and phone numbers. Let me know if you want me to try to fix you up with any contacts here and I will make enquiries.
3. Sequencing via MIDI? This should be no problem with your existing system. You would need the proper leads if interfacing from a PC to say a sound card type interface. I would expect Cakewalk pro would come complete with interface leads, but I am not sure of that. Anyway I would not expect any problem in sequencing, but interfacing to a PC is best done by purchasing the interface leads ready made.

Q

Do you know of any body who repairs Wersi Organs in England ? I have an Omega DX10 which is very sick at the moment

A

WERSI Service Engineers are given on my Links page.
In the UK you have Colin Howe Tel. 07970-519906. or Peter Armitage Organ Services UK on Tel/Fax 01422-359603. Mobile 0836-21459.
I get many cries for help from people needing to get their organs repaired. Although I am an electronics engineer, after a weeks work I don't have much inclination to go chasing round the country repairing organs, no matter how lucrative.
If you are a WERSI service engineer in any country, and not included on my links page, please drop me a line with your details.

Q

I'm curious as to whether some of the obsolete ICs in the Sprectra (and other models), such as the 9310 counters on the slave cards, are still available somewhere. Do you know of any source?

A

You can often find suppliers of these obsolete IC's on the Internet by feeding the identity into a search engine.

Q

A

You did not say where you were from? I would guess the USA as most of my cries for help on WERSI seem to come from there. We have quite a strong self help group in the UK in the Wersi Enthusiasts Club here. Sorry to hear about your friends Spectra. Most faults on the organs can be traced to poor connections, D-connectors, ribbon cable connections and so on. It is worth while double checking these connections, even take them off and remake them. Take precautions against static damage; plug the organ into a power point with power off to make a good earth connection, and earth yourself, if necessary via a suitable bit of wire. I have not too much knowledge on the Spectra myself. The most knowledgeable person in the UK is probably Colin Howe. He is not on e-mail but snail mail contact addresses and phone no. for him can be had via my links pages.

Q

Do you have any information, or can you point me in any direction for a source of an SL3 slave board. When I built my DX350, around 1985, I could only afford 2 and have always been conscious of the notes dropping out! My interest in organ playing having reawakened, I do not know where to start to try to find an SL3 or SL3 kit. (UK)

A

Try Colin Howe MOBILE UK Phone +44 (0)7970-519906.

Q

Need couple slave boards for DX-700 CD to go full Polyphony (32 notes). Does anyone sell "used" CD slave boards? (USA)

A

I would try:-

Q

DX 10 I have a bad rom card and would also like some other rhythms (USA)

A

I am afraid I do not have any ROM cards for the DX10 myself. I suggest that you could try the WERSI agents at Lancaster, their address is:

Q

I am in need of a repair manual for a Wersi Beta organ. Can you help? The fuses are blowing on the power supply/amp unit. (UK)

A

The most common cause of blowing fuses on this organ is a faulty OM961 i.e. the output power amp. You could prove it by disconnecting the organ from the mains then unplugging the ribbon cable to this chip that is located in the base of the unit. If this is the problem, this chip is now obsolete. Wersi brought out a mod kit using a replacement component. This mod kit is available via Colin Howe, see my "links" pages.
An alternative is to take the stereo audio output into an external amplifier.
The technical manual for the Wersi Beta can be downloaded from my website under my "repair" section. If using Explorer 4 or 5 under Windows then right click the icon and click on "Save target as".Sorry some of the circuit diagrams are a bit hard to read, but they were not much better on the original.

Since writing this reply, I found a better replacement for the OM961 is the SSE-10, manufactured by Obantec for Juke Box components.  It is marketed in the UK by Sound Sense Electronics.

Q

I am trying to cure a Wersi DX10 of blowing fuses every few hours or days, but which works fine in between failures. I suspect ageing capacitors; can you suggest anything please? I was wondering if you'd consider me for inclusion on your list of engineers? I have been in TV and radio repairs for 10 years (C&G 224, BBC TV, freelance). Already some elec. organ restoration experience, started at age 10. Please feel free to contact me regarding either or both of these things.
Many thank in advance

A

A possible cause of blowing fuses on this organ is a faulty OM961 , output power amp. However it normally goes as a permanent failure and not intermittent so your capacitor idea may be possible. this chip is now obsolete although a mod kit is available via Colin Howe, see my "links" pages. An alternative is to take the stereo audio output into an external amplifier. If you needed circuits for the DX10 I do have a copy of the manual I could copy if you paid me the copying and postage.
I'm sure there are often a few organ owners around would welcome some servicing help. I will add your name to my list as a suggestion for people to contact. I will have to wait to next time I update.

Note reply above Re OM961 replacement

The Electronic Organ Constructors Society hold a number of manuals, also spares for the Helios Contact Don Bray +44 (0)1323-894909 They charge 25p/ manual to members but as membership is only £8/annum it should be cheaper than the photocopying. Failing that, I have the following Helios Manuals, obtained from the same source: AM 072 Master Assembly AM502 Wersidata AM721 Master Assembly W2S/SV AM722 Master Assembly W2T/TV Also info on the reverb unit etc. If you are interested in a particular board let me know and I'll e-mail the circuit. Or I can photocopy sections for you if you pay for the copying. Note that there are up to 100 pages per manual, and may not copy so well. Let me know anyway. I am in the process of transcribing the cableform details of most of the analogue WERSI instruments including the Helios that I will be posting on my own website at http://homepages.tesco.net/~martin.batesuk/wersi/repairs/repairs.htm

Q

We cannot get the organ to play with the stops on the top of the organ. The drawbars give us something but simply pushing down stops does nothing, no sound no changes.

A

If you are not familiar with the organ, then this may be an operational problem.
On the top of the organ there are three tabs, labeled, Fixed Stops Drawbars, Drawbars - WERSI Voice and Fixed Stop WERSIVoice. It would be necessary to have the first tab in the down position to get the other stops to work. Also there are some Grey coloured drawbars on the left-hand side. You should pull them all out.
If you still fail to get any sound from the stops then it could be an electrical fault. The audio routing on the organ takes place on a mother board and then goes to Left and Right Pre-amps. There is a 15 volt supply to this board. A possible cause of the problem may be a bad connection on one of the leads on the cableform going into the motherboard.
Tech Support Spares for older WERSI organs is hard to obtain as they were not produced in large numbers, and often requires the obtaining of second hand spares.

Q

I have a WERSI model Zenith W3S/A made in 1980. To rebuild the organ I need (5)WIC 7015 (2)AY3 0214 or MO86 (2)WIC 4069. Do you know of anyone having these circuits?

A

1. WIC 7015, Is equivalent to the standard CMOS 4024 chip, this is standard so you should have no problem obtaining it.
2. The AY3 0214 TOS, went out of production about 1980, a retro has been developed which is available from the Organ Service Corporation and Morelock's Organ Parts
the M086 went out of production in 1981.
3. WIC 4069, is a standard CMOS 4069, but it is important that you use a UB type.

Q

My church has recently been given a Wersi (Zenith W3S)? I am guessing that this is the one since I can only tell by looking at a picture on an album cover that was with it. There are various manuals called ASSEMBLY manuals but no apparent operators manual. I am in the dark. Where can I get an owners manual?

A

The fact that you have the Zenith Assembly Manuals would indicate that it was home built. Useful as it has the information for a technician to be able to carry out repairs.
Wersi Owners manuals were often in German.

The contact for Wersi parts and manuals in the USA is:-
