Although I have had many letters from people needing help in repair of their organs, or wishing to buy or sell the instruments. I had none with offers for playing tips or software.

- - - that was until last year, when Terry Perdue sent me copies of a number of PC routines he wrote for the DX400/500 series and the Spectra

These routines were designed to run under DOS.
I have found that there can be problems running the DOS file transfer routines under MS-Windows causing an "illegal operation " and the routine to close. I do not know the reasons for this, all the other features work under all versions of Windows and file transfers under Windows do work on some PC's.

If you use these routines, I would welcome any feedback as to how it works for you, and what operating system and hardware you are using. For people who find they have file transfer problems, I will put some solutions at the bottom of this page.

It will be necessary to interface a PC to the organ via the RS232 port. Instructions to do this may be found on my "Connections" page.
To download the software or User Guides, "Right Click" and "Save Target As"

CONTENTS

  1. The WERSI ORGANizer for DX400/500
  2. The WERSI RHYTHMate for CX4
  3. The WERSI MusicMate for DMS organs
  4. The WERSI FileMate for Spectra
  5. Help files If you have problems with file transfers to your WERSI.

The Wersi ORGANizer For DMS organs DX400/500 CX4 series.
(Download)

With the AMS memory system, WERSI gave users the option of saving separate registrations and rhythms to tape or PC. All DMS Registrations had to be via CV-1 and all rhythms via Rhythm-1 which could then be relocated as desired.

The WERSI ORGANizer serves three primary functions.

  1. Data files may be uploaded and saved to PC via the RS232 port, this is a faster and more reliable method than using the Tape Cassette interface, however note my comments above about using this software in a DOS Emulation window.
  2. It simplifies the process of allocating the Program Voices and Rhythms to different keys on the console. This may be done on the PC, the final data files are then uploaded to the WERSI.
  3. The software enables registrations to be varied to taste, away from the organ.

Files to be used with the WERSI ORGANizer require the suffix .org,
file size 17KB

Terry's original instruction manual may be downloaded here

If you wish to try out the software before connecting up to your WERSI you can download a copy of the DX400/500 standard instruments and rhythm data file here.

The WERSI RHYTHMate For CX4 rhythm units. (Download)

It has always been possible to program ones own rhythms for the CX4 directly on the console. Possible! -- not very practical.

The WERSI RHYTHMate allows you to edit your own rhythms and accompaniments for the CX4 on the PC directly. Programing rhythms beat-by-beat, choosing the percussion instrument for each beat, and change the tempo.

Files to be used with the WERSI RHYTHMate require the suffix .rhy
file size 9KB

Terry's original instruction manual may be downloaded here

If you wish to try out the software before connecting up to your WERSI you can download a copy of the CX4 standard rhythm data file here.

The WERSI MusicMate For DMS organ series. (Download)

The WERSI MusicMate makes use of the record/play data via RS232 facility. Similar to the MIDI this allows the recording of music played on the keys which is then saved as a *.ply file on the PC, and the playback of *Ply files

I write this "tongue in cheek" as I have not succeeded in getting this software to operate myself, but for anyone prepared to have a go, please write and let me know how you get on.

I don't have a copy of the instruction manual so I will copy the F-Key functions below.

Function Keys:-

  • F! = Enable Record Mode and save *Ply file from WERSI organ via RS232 port (9.6KB).
    "Interface, R-S, Compute" on organ
  • F2 = Play *.rhy file back on the WERSI organ via RS232 port (9.6KB)
Select "Interface, W-E-R-S-I, Compute" on the organ, then press space on the PC.
  • F3 = Not used
  • F4 = Not used
  • F5 = erase a play file
  • F6 =Select PC Drive letter A to E
  • F8 = Not used
  • F9 = Not used
  • F10 = EXIT
  • Esc = Abort for (F1-F5)

If you have problems using Oz or any of the other routines to transfer files to/from the WERSI, here are some other options:-

  1. Use a Windows based Terminal Emulator. (Below)
  2. Reboot directly into DOS.
  3. Partition your drive to run MS-DOS & MS-Windows on the same PC
  4. Use a different PC

1. Use a Windows based Terminal Emulator to do the file transfers, and use the DOS based routines to edit and collate the rhythms and registrations. Possible options are
    • ProComm Plus from Symantec. I found this very user friendly, and simple to use. However it does have a lot of options that you are not going to require for this application and is quite expensive.
    • cKuBed creative terminal emulator from Creative Communication Consultant. This comes with a 30 day free trial and is cheaper than ProComm, although not quite so user friendly.
    • TetraTerm Pro Produced by T. Teranishi in Japan, is freeware, and seems to work OK in transferring files to the WERSI.

The following operation notes, I have written for TetraTerm Pro, The procedure is similar for cKuBed, except the menus are slightly different, The settings for the WERSI are written for the DX400/500, but the procedures should still be of assistance to Spectra owners..

    • Launch TetraTerm Pro, in the New Connection Window, select "SERIAL" > "OK".
    • Select "SETUP" > "SERIAL PORT"
      • Port = COM1 (Assuming that is the port you are using)
      • Baud = 9600
      • Data = 8 bit
      • Parity = None
      • Stop = 1 bit
      • Flow = None
    • On the WERSI select 9600 with "Compute" > "W" > "Compute"
    • To send a file from the PC to the WERSI:-
      • If you have the WERSI AMS, select the data bank W, E, R or S that you wish to save the data into.
      • Put the WERSI to the receive file mode "Interface" > "W-E-R-S-I" > "Compute"
      • On the PC select "FILE" > "SEND FILE >
        • Select "BINARY" (Important!), Note on cKuBed you select "RAW DATA" not "ASCII"
        • Select the directory on your PC where the datafile for the WERSI is located
        • Select the Data File you wish to transfer to the WERSI
        • Select "OPEN"
      • On the PC you should now have a small "Bytes Transferred" Window, clocking up the bits sent.
      • On the WERSI you should also see an indication of data being received on the display.  On correct completion you should have 9K6,RV.TE00,TV.T.E00 on the display.
      • Clear "Interface" on the Organ
      • If for some reason the data is not received, (bad cable connections etc.), the organ will get locked up in the receive data mode and you will find that you cannot swich data banks.  To clear select "Interface" > "I" "Compute" on the organ.
    • To send a file from the WERSI to the PC:-
      • On the PC select "FILE" > "LOG"
      • Select the directory on your PC where the datafile is to be stored.
      • Enter the name of the file you wish to save.  C&W, Standard etc. To be compatable with Oz keep the filename to 8 characters or less.
      • OPTION = "Select Binary", "Do Not Select Append"
      • Click "OPEN"
      • You will probably need to then click TetraTerm in the task bar, to bring the Log Window to the top. This should have a Bytes Transferred indication, also "CLOSE", "PAUSE" and "HELP" buttons.
      • If you have the WERSI AMS, select the data bank W, E, R or S that you wish to transfer the data from.
      • Put the Wersi into the send data mode with "Interface" > "W" > "Compute"
      • The Wersi should show the data being sent.  The Log window on the PC should show the data bits clocking up.  If all is successful it should stop at "16412 Bytes Transferred"
      • Select "CLOSE" to close the log file.  Until this is done, you cannot read the file on the PC.  (On ProComm it closes the file automatically when it has not received any data into the file for a number of seconds)
      • Clear "Interface" on the Organ.
      • Locate the file on the PC using "Explorer", or "My Computer" Right Click, and use "Rename" to add the .ORG suffix for compatability with Oz. For Rm (RHYTHMate the suffix is .RHY)
    • On completion go to "SETUP" > "SAVE SETUP" and save the setup as say WERSI.ini, to restore do the same selecting "RESTORE SETUP" which eliminates having to do all the above next time.

    2. Reboot into DOS first.

    • If you are running Windows 98, go to "Start" > "Shutdown" > "Restart in MS-DOS mode". If you are running Windows XP it is not possible to run DOS directly. For other versions of Windows, 2000, ME, NT etc. I am not sure
    • Have a separate boot disc for DOS. If your machine still sports a floppy drive, this may also be a simple solution. The problem is that the bootable floppy needs to be produced on a machine running DOS in the first place. Oz and the WERSI files are very small, so I would expect it should be possible to make a bootable floppy with Oz and all the files on it.
    • Bootable CD's or even bootable USB flash drives are also options if your BIOS allows them

    3. Use an application such as Partition Magic, which allows a number of different operating systems, to be run on the same PC. These all have different partitions on the disc, so one can have for example, WinXP, Win98, DOS, Linux etc all on the same machine. Obviously only one application can run at any one time.

    4. Use an old PC loaded with DOS compatible software for use with the WERSI.

Please let me know how you get on, also which version of MS-Windows you are using, as I would like to update my website with the info for the benefit of others.
