The Martin Drew Trio
featuring Mornington
Lockett & Laurence Cottle
A dynamic new band with a slightly unusual line up, which gives a great deal of musical freedom, dynamism and excitement, playing standard tunes and original compositions with a flair and virtuosity befitting three world class musicians.
Mornington Lockett : Saxophone
Mornington was born in London, but grew up on the Isle of Wight where he began playing jazz, sitting in with local traditional and mainstream musicians while still at school. At Dartington College, in Devon, he studied saxophone with Bobby Wellins, as well as classical clarinet, composition, and the North Indian Sitar. He persuaded the college authorities to allow him to take Jazz Saxophone as a first study, and became the first person in the U.K. to gain a degree qualification on the instrument. He moved to London in 1984 to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has worked professionally ever since.
As a member of the Ronnie Scott Sextet, Mornington worked extensively in Britain and abroad. He has recorded with guitarist Jim Mullen, singers Sarah Jane Morris (The Communards) and Ian Shaw, the group 'Sax Appeal’, and US bass guitar virtuoso Joe Hubbard. In 1995, he performed in concert with Cuban trumpet supremo Arturo Sandoval at the Barbican Concert Hall and more recently toured with Danish bass-player Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen. He is currently working / recording with Stan & Clarke Tracey and Oscar Peterson’s drummer, Martin Drew.
Mornington has recorded an album, entitled appropriately, ‘Mornington Lockett’ for the EFZ label.
He lists his main influences as Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, John Coltrane, Steve Grossman and David Sanborn.In addition to the previously mentioned, some of the musicians and groups Mornington has worked with include Jimmy Smith, Don Weller, Andrea Vicari, INXS, The Christians, S'Express, Monie Love, Trevor Horn, Richard Niles, Mario Castronari, Derek Nash, Ryuichi Sakamoto, World Party and US3.

Laurence Cottle : Electric Bass
Laurence has been playing on the London scene since his return from America in 1985.
While in the USA he played with Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth and was a member of the Jazz/Rock cult band ‘The Fents’, who recorded two very well received albums.
In the last five years he has been a member of the Jim Mullen Quartet and produced Jim’s last three records.
Laurence was featured on Jason Rebello’s first album which was produced by Wayne Shorter.
He has also recorded with Itchy Fingers, Bob Berg, Mornington Lockett and has performed with Eddie Henderson, The Mike Gibbs Orchestra and Oscar Peterson’s drummer, Martin Drew, and his own fantastic big band.
Laurence’s solo album is available on ‘Cream Records’.
His amazing virtuosity and ability to fit in to many musical genres ensure that Laurence is one of the most sought after musicians around today.
Martin Drew : Drums
Born in Northampton, England, Martin started to play the drums when he was six years old. Played his first professional engagement at thirteen. He has been involved in all kinds of music, particularly jazz, in the studio, concerts, clubs, radio, television, and been featured with many major artists at home and abroad. Recognised as a dedicated, travelled, experienced and respected musician, Martin has played with, and been requested by, many of the world’s great musicians. He has a wealth of experience, natural ability, a fine technique and the ability to adapt and fit into many different kinds of playing situations. Martin has been playing for over 50 years, won awards, and has entries in various books and encyclopedias all over the world. His track record is one to be proud of, and speaks for itself.
For thirty years, from 1974 until 2004, Martin toured and recorded all over the world with the legendary piano genius, Oscar Peterson. He played with the late, great Ronnie Scott for twenty years, from 1975 to 1995. With Ronnie’s various bands, and numerous other groups, Martin performed countless engagements at the world famous Ronnie Scott's Club, in London.
