This medal replaced the India GSM which had been awarded for various minor campaigns over a period of four decades from 1854. Fighting troops were given the medal in silver but native bearers and servants were given a bronze version. Although the clasp Waziristan 1901-2 is rare to British recipients it was awarded to a number of regiments.
