Do-It-Yourself Medal Framing.
Preparation of other objects
Most objects that you wish to put into your frame will not require special preparation other than a bit of thought to decide how they will be fixed to the frame back. This is a short list of the most common articles that we have included in frames.
Cap Badges - Clean and polish as per the discussion on medal preparation. Cap badges can usually be fixed to the frame back in the same fashion as the badge was originally attached. A small cut in the velveteen backing is all that is usually required. Badges that require a securing bar or spring clip are best secured to the backing with velcro or similar or even with two small holes drilled into the MDF back.
Buttons - Clean and polish. Fix buttons with a small hole in the frame back - any holes drilled into the MDF back should be slightly undersize to allow a snug fit when the object is pushed in, it is not usually necessary to provide any additional securing from the back of the frame.
Dog Tags - Self adhesive Velcro is ideal for securing these.
Photographs - Secure photographs to mountboard or coloured card using a spray mount or similar . The card can be trimmed using a mount cutter or craft knife - a bevelled edge looks good. The mounted photograph can be fixed to the back using either velcro or self adhesive pads , a small dab of white glue on the pads will ensure a permanent fix to the velveteen.
Plaque - If you are considering making your own plaque (similar to the example) - this is how we do it. First of all we produce a typed copy (Ariel Black Western 10) of the wording, exactly as it will appear on the plaque. This is to get the correct spacing for the dry lettering. We use white 4mm (16pt) dry lettering on mountboard and bevel cut the edges. The finished plaque is fixed to the velveteen with adhesive pads or velcro.
Shoulder Flashes - Self adhesive Velcro is best
