This medal was awarded for a number of minor campaigns and operations in India  before and after the First World War. The medals were struck at the Royal Mint in London and by the Indian government in Calcutta - the only difference between the two versions is that the British version has an ornate claw suspender and the Indian version is plain. Medals with the bars NORTH WEST FRONTIER 1908 and ABHOR 1911-12 were also issued in bronze to native bearers.
