Michael
Pink trained at the Royal Ballet School,
his early choreographic work won him the first Ursula Moreton
Choreographic Competition as well as the Royal Society of Arts
Competition. He was also invited by Sir Frederick Ashton to assist
in the choreographing of the Anacat Fashion Show.
He joined London
Festival Ballet [now English National Ballet] in 1975 during his
ten years with the company he danced many leading roles in with
Patricia Ruanne, Eva Evdokimova Elisabetta Terabust, Lynn Seymour
and most noticeably his partnership with Natalia Makarova in Onegin.
He worked with many notable choreographers such as Massine, Nureyev,
Tetley, Bruce, Schaufuss, Hynd, Tudor, Ashton, Beriosova.
Whilst with London
Festival Ballet, he choreographed 1914 which was nominated for
a West End Theatre Award, IBERTISSMENT for the first National
Tour of L.F.B.2. Also the PAS DE SIX in Swan Lake.
In 1982 he collaborated
with the composer Michael Berkeley on ATTRACTIONS for Northern
Ballet Theatre. In the same year he created SUMMER DAYS for Nederlands
Dance Theatre 2. and has worked as repetiteur for Nureyevs
Romeo and Juliet at the Paris Opera and La Scala Milan.
In 1987 he became
the Founding Director of Ballet Central, the performing group
of Central School of Ballet in London. During his four years as
Director he established the group as a National Touring Company
securing sponsorship from British Gas. His collaboration with
composer Philip Feeney produced seven original works for the company
as well as MEMOIRE IMAGINAIRE for Northern Ballet, which he later
adapted for use by H.T.V International as the centrepiece of a
film drama.
Mr. Pink joined Northern
Ballet as Associate Artistic Director in 1988 choreographing his
first full length production DON QUIXOTE as well as re-staging
DANSE CLASSIQUE. In 1989 he created an all male contemporary work
based on Wilfred Owens poem STRANGE MEETING.
In collaboration with Christopher Gable he choreographed SWAN
LAKE and a revised version of DON QUIXOTE
.
In 1996 he created
A three act Dance Drama based on Bram Stoker's novel DRACULA which
won critical acclaim both in England and North America when re-staged
for the Atlanta Ballet. Dracula wasperformed at the new Sadlers
Wells Theatre 1999 and broke all previous box office records.
In collaboration
with Christopher Gable he choreographed a new version of GISELLE
set in 1939 .The Norwegian National Ballet will perform this production
as part of a retrospective on Giselle in 1999.
In 1998 he Directed
and Choreographed THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME for Northern Ballet
Theatre. This production will be re-staged in Atlanta in 1999.
and for Boston Ballet in 2001.
Mr. Pink has established
himself as an international teacher with the Norwegian National
Ballet, Aterballetto, Balleto di Toscanna Italy, The Hartford
Ballet U.S.A., Rozas Dance Company, London Contemporary Dance
Company, Ballet Rambert, The London City Ballet (making a guest
appearance as Tybalt In Romeo and Juliet) The White Oaks Dance
Project, English National Ballet, Phoenix Dance Company as well
as most major professional Teaching schools in England. He has
also re-staged several of his works in London, Oslo, Toronto and
Atlanta.
