OK, Now, one of the easiest bits of spannering that a Caterham owner should be able to perform - regardless of ability - is an oil-change. In fact, it's an ideal entry-point into the world of spannering and should give new owners a sense of achievement and a growing confidence that some jobs can be easily and cheaply performed away from costly service-centres. Without wishing to dismay the novices, however, there are oil-changes and 'big' oil changes... Big vs. Basic Oil ChangesA basic oil-change simply involves removing the sump plug, draining the old oil out of the engine, removing the old oil-filter, fitting a new filter, refitting the sump-plug and then refilling the engine. Easy - and all you should need to do at 6k intervals (or less if you track the car) until a 12k service (or thereabouts) arrives. At 12k intervals, the Caterham recommended service schedule suggests renewal of the foam baffle that lives in the sump at the bottom of a standard k-series engine. If this is neglected, the foam can break up over time and clog various bits of the engine - so to counter this, the sump has to be removed and the foam changed - and the addition of this extra step is why we call it a 'big' oil-change. All of the 'basic' oil-change steps are the same, though - so the 'big' steps will just be included as optional items. On to: Oil-Change: Materials |
