...stop press... AR7E Mark I Aeroscreen spotted...

Well, howzabout that then?

In a break from tradition, AR7E have actually made something...

We've been running JPE-style aeroscreens for some time now - and are completely hooked - but we've not been overly impressed with the amount of air they shovel aside.

The air-flow appears to hit the driver somewhere around the forehead area whereas it should really go straight over the top...

The problem stems from the JPE screen being fairly short, fairly shallowly angled and relatively close to the driver - it's doing too little, too late.

So, we decided to build something slightly more effective - loosely modelled on the Vauxhall race screen (and closely modelled by the well-regarded Peter Cox SV device).

So here it is...

This is definitely a test and evaluation model - there are a number of small issue apparent already such as:

i) Height and profile of top edge (was supposed to be lower and with a horizontal top-edge for most of the width

ii) Half-door fitment - The screen was designed to curve around and blend in with the half-doors - but it currently obscures the front HD fixing point. It is unclear how best to tackle this (e.g. drill a hole in the screen to gain access to the popper, or devise  a more permanent HD fitment - possibly utilising the mirror mounts).

iii) Tonneau Fitment - same basic issue as with the HD fitment - the wrap-around design of the screen obscures access to the tonneau poppers and stops the tonneau fitting flush with the scuttle for its full width.

iv) Passenger Tonneau - the old JPE screen was a full-width design. This stopped air (and water) getting under the leading edge of the tonneau and ripping it off at speed. The Mark I AR7E screen is designed for the driver only - and either a separate, very short spoiler (sort of a mini version of the JPE) will have to be designed for the passenger side, or such a device will have to be integrated into the AR7E design (i.e. the AR7E will revert to being a full-width device, but the passenger side will be extremely minimalistic.

 

Conclusions

OK, after testing this screen for a while, we made some minor modifications - mainly to reprofile the top-edge of the screen and lower it (it was cutting into the straight-forward view just a little too much).

Aside from that, it was pretty successful. Much more air was being shovelled over the drivers head - and in slightly damp conditions, the feeling was that the drivers helmet visor received much less spray and cleared more easily than was the case with the JPE.

The only issues were with the styling (especially the section in front of the mirror) and the fact that the mirror was no longer being partially supported by the JPE screen - and was vibrating quite badly at speed as a result...

Oh, and we hadn't found a neat way to remount the Sigma bike comp that used to attach directly to the JPE screen...

So, on to the Mark II...
