We just knew this was going to happen... Faced with the need for a helmet for one of our drivers (the handsome one with the 1st class honours degree - contact the webmaster for further information...), off we pottered to Grand Prix Racewear at the Silverstone circuit. The best advice anyone can be given when buying their first helmet is to ignore any expectations or desires regarding price, make or model and to just try on as wide a range of helmets as possible without prejudice. Depending on the shape and size of your head, you might find that there is a cheaper alternative available than expected that fits perfectly and that the expensive, desirable helmets don't fit at all. Well, if that turns out to be the case, lucky you! But we knew that this driver had a large head - he was wearing adult riding helmets at the age of 7 - and previous attempts to wear a lid usually ended up with the chin-guard sitting somewhere in front of the nose and eyes - they all seemed to tilt backwards. So, anyway, we tried the 'affordable' Sparco Formula helmet (200 quid). Ouch! Bloody-hell! It hurt quite badly and was tilted back as usual. Right... next helmet. Oooh! Pinches badly across the top of the forehead. Next... The next one wouldn't even fit past the guys ears despite being the largest size available. Next up, just to get a feel for which brand fitted best - an Arai GP5 kart helmet. Oooh, lovely! An even fit all-round - except for being slightly loose around the cheeks (more on that story later...) So we tried the racing version - Snell 2000 rated (includes fire retarding features etc.). Luvverly. Downside? Cost. As it stands, the helmet was 420 quid. But being as it was certificated to a foreign standard (Snell) rather than the similar BS standard, it is not treated as a safety item (doh!) and attracts VAT! Luckily, a 10% discount took some of the sting out of Gordon Browns tail... Take that, chancellor! |
