Right - let's get cracking... This walkthrough relates to the standard differential (not Limited Slip Diff variants) as used on the current K-series De-Dion chassis cars. Along with gearbox oil, diff oil does not need regular replacement in the way that engine-oil does - this is mainly because it does not come into contact with nasty by-products of the combustion process. You might find, however, that over a period of time, the diff oil level might need a top-up due to either oil being lost through minor leaks in the driveshaft seals, or from oil being ejected through the breather tube during hard cornering (i.e. track days and the like). Checking the oil levelAh - well, there isn't an easy way to do this... the only reliable way is to refill the diff... Confused? Let's start with the basics... <Click image for full size> The slightly badly-lit (and focussed...) picture above shows the diff from the right-hand side (with the right, rear wheel removed). You can see that at the top of the diff, there is a short breather pipe - this vents excess oil straight to the open air (i.e. there are not catch tanks or similar). Approximately level with the drive-shaft center line, lower down the back face of the diff, is the filler plug (a 10mm hex-key fitting). There is no drain plug... (...because you should never need to *change* the diff oil, only top it up...) You'll notice that the filler plug enters the diff horizontally - so if you kept pumping oil in there, eventually the oil level would reach the filler plug and then overflow... ...and that's how you check the diff is full...! |
