First of all - apologies ->we don't currently have appropriate pictures to support this article... to be rectified... Maintenance of the standard front brakes is a lot easier than the rears - a pad change shouldn't take more than a few minutes once the wheels are off. The front callipers have two pistons - one for each pad - and unlike the rears, you won't need a special tool to push the pistons back into the calliper bodies (a bit of leverage with a spanner does the trick...) Another difference is that the pads can be removed without taking the calliper apart... Anatomy of the Front BrakesWith reference to the picture below*, we can see that the two pistons are arranged either side of the disk. The pads slide on a pair of steel pins that run from one side of the calliper to the other - the pins are secured in place by split-pins. The only other components of interest are the anti-squeel shims (two thin metal plates that sit against the back of the pads. *Picture
to follow - please use your imagination for now... Removing the padsThe procedure really is simple and easy. 1.) Remove the split-pins from the steel slide rods using a pair of needle-nosed pliers. 2.) Slide the rods out of thr calliper body 3.) Withdraw the anti-squeel shims 4.) Withdraw the pads This final step might require you to apply a small amount of force to ease the pads back -moderate finger pressure is usually sufficient. Once the pads are out, you can gently lever the pistons fully back using a spanner wedged between the disk and the piston (ideally keeping the end of the spanner off the polished disc surface - although with the amount of effort required, no damage is likely to result) New pads (if required) are prepared by applying a small wipe of copper-grease to the back of the pads. The anti-squeel shims can then be 'stuck' to the pads before both are replaced into the calliper. The slide rods can be jiggled back into place and then the split-pins reinserted. Job done!* *before you move the car, pump the brake pedal a couple oftimes until yuo feel resistance - this takes up the slack you created when levering back the pistons. |
