After fitting the JPE Aeroscreen, we eventually decided that a pair of half-doors would be useful in order to reduce the amount of wind and rain that come into the cockpit over the sill... Half doors are actually more expensive than full sidescreens when purchased from Caterham - and although they are as rare as hens-teeth on the secondhand market, a pair were duly found shortly before we resigned ourselves to butchering down a pair of full sidescreens. See here for a comparison of the half door alongside a sidescreen... We're glad we got the real things - they have an extended and raised 'tail' that joins up with the boot-cover just above the rear wheel-arches - sidescreens don't extend this far back and would therefore not be as effective or aesthetically pleasing... For some reason, however, the HDs don't actually fit that well. We were hoping that the tonneau poppers riveted to the bodywork could be reused for the HDS - but unfortunately, the HDs don't extend far enough down the bodywork below the sills... A solution was created by manufacturing some extension straps out of nylon webbing - although these are not the cleanest of solutions visually, they do work... <Click for Full Size Image> ...and they also solved a follow-up problem... The trouble with the extension straps was that they allowed the bottom edge of the HDs to lean out from the car - thus creating a one or two centimetre gap between the HD and the bodywork. This gap is sufficient to let in some wet and drafty air and somewhat defeats the purpose of the HDs in the first place. The solution was to attach two more extension straps - but this time to anchor them using the two poppers on the inside of the sill and wheel arch that are normally used to secure the full side-screens. These straps are taught across the sill/arch and hold the HD tight against the bodywork... <Click for Full Size Image> <Click for Full Size Image> |
