OK, as usual, we will be dealing with a k-series engine fitted with an Apollo air-oil separator tank. Dry-sumped systems will not be covered. If you have a k-series engine *without* an Apollo, you will just need slightly less oil and will skip one minor step. So - what do we need? Basic Oil ChangeYou will need: At least 7 litres of 5W40 Fully Synthetic oil (we use Halfords own-brand - it might be 'un-sexy', but it works fine and is frequently available on a discount) An oil-filter. Again, we use Halfords own-brand. The part number is HOF213 - alternatively just look up whatever the Rover 25 is currently using if you decide to get another brand. One or two oil-drain bottles. Halfords do some black-plastic 6-litre drain bottles that are OK. We'd also recommend something like an aluminium paint-roller tray to catch drips blown about by the wind (not needed if you work in a garage...) If you've got an Apollo tank, you will need a 32mm spanner (bicycle headset spanners are good for this - do *not* try to use an adjustable spanner). You will also need a 10mm allen (hex) key. An oil-filter 'wrench' - various designs are available, pick the one that you are happy with (we use a chain-based device.) A 19mm socket is required to undo the sump-plug. Plenty of pairs of disposable latex gloves, newspaper, polythene 'dust' sheets, cat-litter (for spills) etc. etc... Finally, you will need some Blue Hylomar (or similar gasket-paste) to seal the sump-plug. Big Oil ChangeAll of the above, plus the foam sump-baffle (available only from Caterham Cars) - this is about £8+VAT/shipping. You will also need both 5mm and 6mm hex (allen) keys or preferably allen/hex socket heads. A sharp craft knife is needed to cut sections of the foam - and a soldering iron can be handy to make bolt-holes... A replacement sump-gasket should *not* be necessary.
Right, that's about it in terms of parts. On to the action... |
