OK, so far we've jacked the car up and undone the rear anti-roll bar (if fitted). We are working towards removing the driveshafts from the diff and De Dion tube assembly - but first of all, we need to remove the brake calipers. Now, there's an easy way and a proper way to do this. Easy: This method involves unbolting the entire caliper unit from the De Dion ears and sliding the assembly (including pads) off the disc. It can be done, but it risks chipping the edges of the pads and is only slightly less involved than the pukka method anyway... Proper: The proper method involves removing the rear brake pads prior to disconnecting the calipers themselves. Step One:First of all, make sure that the handbrake is off. Now undo the two uppermost bolts at the back of the caliper assembly as in the following image: Click Image for Full Size. Key: A- 15mm lock nut B- 13mm bolt C- Bleed Nipple D- Handbrake actuator Once the two bolts are undone (they should be thread-locked when reassembled), the central section of the caliper can be carefully lifted up (care is needed so that the rigid brake pipes are not damaged...) With the caliper subassembly raised, you should be able to remove the two pads - it's a good idea to label these (inside left, outside left etc.) so that they go back in the correct order. With the pads out of the way, the caliper sub assembly can be lightly bolted back onto the main unit - no need to fully tighten the bolts. Step TwoIn this step, you will require some string or wire to suspend the brake caliper units from the main suspension springs in order to avoid damaging the brake pipes. First of all, undo the two main (lower) caliper retention bolts that secure the main caliper unit to the De Dion ear. The entire caliper unit should then be carefully lifted free of the brake disc (careful of those solid brake pipes, once again...) and secured out of the way using your wire or string as in the following picture: Click Image for Full Size. This picture is actually one step further on - the driveshafts have been removed - but you can see where the caliper unit is suspended via a piece of wire 'A' connected to the handbrake actuator and the main suspension spring. You're about to see the same image in the next step...
