A GT Centre Mirror was chosen for main duties with Formula mirrors for each side. Strictly speaking, the Formula mirrors don't have a sufficient mirror area for road use - if this worries you, get the 'Saloon' version instead. After some months of using the Formulas, this is what we did (pictures to follow...) We selected flat glass for the centre mirror and convex for the sides to minimise blind-spots. After initial testing, we had to contact SPA for revised mirror stalks. The centre mirror stalk was too high at 100mm's tall - all that could be seen in the centre was the FIA diagonal strut in the roll-bar. The side mirrors ended up too low - resulting in a good view of the rear wings and a nasty blindspot. SPA were able to supply a 40mm centre post (same as they sell to Caterham for their aeroscreen solutions). This allows a view under the FIA diagonal - still not brilliant, but a serious improvement. SPA were also able to send a set of custom side stalks - these were approximately 1.5 inches taller - and the now work a treat. They see well over the top of the rear wings and eliminate the previous blind-spot by being mounted at a more sensible angle (closer to parallel to the ground). A top tip is to use Rivnuts to secure the side mirrors to the scuttle - this means you won't have to fiddle nuts on from the inside. If you see what I mean... Go to the Gallery for some pictures including the mirrors in both configurations. Update...After experiencing the original SPA Formula side mirrors for a few months, the decision was made to upgrade them to larger SPA Saloon models. Spot the difference - SPA Saloons on the left, SPA Formulas on the right. Although it doesn't look like it in the pictures above, these mirrors have approximately 50% more area than the Formulas - and provide a much, much better rear view... They look fine and work well - but we should have chosen them straight off. They came with stems that are mid-way in height between the original Formulas and the custom tall stems we ordered - so for extra visibility, we continued using the custom stems. |
