Step 1.5 is an optional, peace of mind stage. Before you start gluing bits and pieces together and before all of the wires are tied down etc., you might want to do a quick test.

Note - the following assumes that your chosen connectors can be disassembled:

All we are trying to do here is make sure that the bike computer can read a signal at the end of the extended wire we have created.

Simply fit your chosen connectors (spades, bullets, terminal block, whatever) to the tinned ends of your wires and connect the head-unit lead to one end of the extension lead and the sensor wire to the other end making sure that nothing can short out.

Now, with the bike computer within view, quickly wave the magnet back and forth past the sensor - it doesn't have to be fast (twice a second is OK), but the magnet must come within about 5mm (1/4 inch) of the sensor.

If all is well, you should see some kind of speed reading flash up - it doesn't matter what it is, the goal of this test was just to get a signal.

If you didn't get a reading, it should be a case of methodically checking the connections and checking the bike computer instructions to make sure that you were moving the magnet past the right place on the sensor (some are pickier than others).

When you are happy, you can disassemble the connections in preparation for assembly on the car...
