We're coming towards the end of the installation procedure that will see us fit a Sigma BC1200 bike computer in the 7... At this point:
Step four isn't rocket science - but it will make a fair bit of difference to how neat your installation looks. Or messy. Beauty and the beholder... etc. Step 4a - Sensor EndFirst of all, connect the sensor wire (fed through along the front suspension, remember) to one end of the extension wire making sure that whatever type of connectors you chose cannot short each other (or the chassis) out. It is a good idea to tie-wrap (or use tie-anchors) this end of the extension wire to the chassis at this point - you will be running the wire back along towards the cockpit and you want to be able to put a little tension on the wire without straining the connection. Step 4b - BulkheadThe intention is to feed the extension wire through the bulkhead hole just below the steering column. Typically this is blanked off by a solid (as opposed to cable conduit) grommet. You will either need to get a proper cable grommet (i.e. a rubber ring rather than disk), or you will need to make a hole in the existing disk-grommet and feed the extension wire through. Do this. Now. Step 4c - TachoTo avoid drilling holes in the dash, we're going to run the head-unit wire through the tacho hole. So the first thing to do is undo the knurled knobs on the back of the tacho and remove it (unplug it for easy access). Before we go any further, we need to make some provision for the head-unit wire so that it is not pinched by the tacho when that goes back in. All you need to do is file a little notch into the 12 O'clock position of the tacho hole on the dash. It only needs to be about 1mm deep - and don't worry, it'll be covered by the tacho bezel afterwards. Step 4d - Head UnitConnect the head-unit wire to the extension wire that has been fed through the bulkhead grommet. Feed the head-unit through the tacho hole from behind the dash. Do a couple of dry-runs to determine where you will place the head-unit (you will want to put your removable wheel back on, most probably). When you are satisfied, apply the mirror fix pad to the back of the plastic wedge and apply to the windscreen. Step 4e - Tidy Up!Now the head-unit is in place, you can replace the tacho - making sure that the head-unit wire sits in the '4c' groove you filed. Try to keep it tidy so that there is not much slack wire between the tacho and the head-unit. Go back to the engine bay and start securing the extension wire - we used tie anchors like this: When these are all in place, you can go back to the cockpit and tidy up any slack wire from that end - much neater to hide it in the rats nest under the dash rather than loose in the engine bay etc... Right, now we can calibrate and test: |
