The first step on the road to installing a Sigma bike computer in a 7 is to prepare the wires. Here we assume that the speed sensor will be attached to the cycle wing stay like this: <Click Image for Full Size> Step 1a - Cut sensor wire to lengthThe sensor wire will run down the wing stay and along the suspension into the engine bay. At this point, to improve access, it is probably a good idea to remove the bonnet and nosecone. Holding the sensor in place (or temporarily tie-wrapping/taping it there), lay the sensor wire out as described above. You will need to allow enough wire to allow for a little slack, but also so that the wire extends as far back as the rear-edge of the nosecone. Don't 'rob Peter to pay Paul' though - you need to balance the amount of sensor-end wire used with that attached to the head-unit mount... The head-unit wire will need to extend behind the dashboard where it will be connected to the extension wire. When you are happy (measure twice, cut once...), cut the sensor wire and carefully strip the insulation from the final centimeter or so for both the sensor wire and the head-unit wire. Tin the ends with a soldering iron... Step 1b - cut extension wire to lengthThe extension wire will run from the rear-edge of the nose-cone, along the top chassis rail, past the steering column and brake fluid reservoir and through the small grommet in the bulkhead before finally terminating somewhere under the dashboard. Measure the extension wire (Halfords basic HiFi hookup wire works OK) leaving a little slack at both ends to make connection with the original sensor/head-unit wires possible. Again, when you are happy, cut, strip and tin. Now we should be ready to move onto Step Two: |
