The Coalition Youth Programme

An important part of the Coalition’s work has always been its work with children and young people who are at risk of offending or of being the victims of crime. The appointment of a dedicated Youth Programme Manager has enabled this work to be focused into a number of effective projects involving young people throughout the region.

The Odysseus Mentoring Project/Volunteering

This project provides the opportunity for positive relationships to develop between young people at risk of offending and adults who are willing to guide, support, challenge and educate those who elect to participate in the project. It involves the private sector, voluntary and statutory agencies working together with parents and guardians to assist young people to work towards their future. The overall benefit of The Odysseus Mentoring Project is to the community, as successful graduates of the scheme are able to play a positive part in the growth and development of their local environment. Established through the North East Chamber of Commerce in 1999, this project is now funded by grants from Gateshead Youth Offending Team, The Northern Rock Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Trust.

The SkiL Project

The Skills Identification and Learning Project is a three year programme involving young people who have a particular interest in developing projects and activities in a voluntary capacity with their peers. The project helps each person to identify his or her existing skills and develop others. It is envisaged that some of the participants will ultimately consider undertaking a Youth and Community Diploma or Degree. This Project is funded by a grant from the Community Fund.

Youth Issues, Projects and Information Website

The YIPI website is a resource for young people and those working with them to network, communicate and share resources and good practice on a regional basis. There are links to other websites, a news section and a forum to enable people to discuss their views. Organisations registering with YIPI have their own page of information within the directory. An interactive resource, it is designed to enable individuals and youth organisations themselves to keep it up-to-date with the latest information. As it grows it will provide a comprehensive and searchable database for those working with young people throughout the region.

Retail Vicitim Initiative

This project, developed with the North East Retail Crime Partnership, involves restorative work with young offenders who have stolen from shops. Local Youth Offending Teams identify young people involved in shoptheft who would benefit from this type of restorative justice. Trained volunteers from the retail sector act as the 'victim' and explain the effects of shoptheft to the young offenders. The Youth Programme provide support to the young offender before and after these sessions.
