James Thornton and the USA Connection
James was born 25 February 1832, probably in Pollington, and baptised 18 March 1832 at Snaith. He married Elizabeth Grayson and emigrated to the USA in the 1860s.
In 1870 he is at the gas works in Brooklyn, Ohio; in 1880 he is described as a watchman at the Peoples Gas Ward. At some point before 1900 he became a grocer, and he died in Cleveland, Ohio 23 January 1922. Elizabeth had died in Cleveland in 1907. They had 10 children:
William Langhorn Thornton married Annie Kiernan in 1892. Their son, William Aloysius Thornton, was born 1893 in Cleveland. A clerk, he married Ludmilla Volenik, a teacher, in 1918.
William and Ludmilla had two sons:
