Miles Thornton

Miles was born 27 January 1841 in Heck and baptised 28 February 1841 at Snaith. By 1861 he had moved away from Heck to work on the railways. He was a railway inspector in 1881 living at Mexborough, and his great nephew George Miles remembered him being described as stationmaster at Mexborough in later years.

He married Elizabeth ?, of Routley, Derbyshire and had 5 children:

• Elizabeth Ann Thornton born c1865, known as Cissie
• Ada Thornton born 1867, married Henry Huntington, an undertaker of Mexborough
• Emily Jane Thornton born 1871
• Ellen Thornton born 1873
• Walter Edward Thornton born 1877

In addition, Miles and Elizabeth brought up nephew William Thornton (1883-1966) after William's mother died in 1885. Elizabeth died in 1911, and Miles a year later. They are buried in Mexborough cemetary.
