Thornton of Pontefract
William Thornton was born about 1794 in Pontefract. He was
probably the son of William Thornton and Sarah ? baptised at
Pontefract St Giles on 12 January 1794. (A William Thornton and Sarah Tummond
had been married at Womersley, near Pontefract, on 2 November 1789.)

He married Ann Langhorn 6
April 1819 in Snaith, witnessed by Richard Langhorn and Hannah
Langhorn. The family had a long association with the Aire
and Calder canal. Their children:

- Thomas Thornton 1821 who died December 1821
- Thomas Thornton 1822 labourer, who lived at the Bridge House in Heck,
and died unmarried in 1907.

- Sally Thornton 1830, who married George Bean after having a son, George,
in 1850

- Jane Thornton 1838 who was living out as a domestic servant at the age
of 12, and returned to live with her brother Thomas at the Bridge House.
She had a son, William, in 1854, but died unmarried in 1920.
