Latest Family News.

Warning.

A certain William Pince Publishers is sending out letters offering “ The Cotgrove Family Chronicle” for about £34.00.  This is a simple list of Cotgrove names and contains no details of the true family history. To read more put “William Pince” in Google. (or click here:-

http://www.marchington.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/warning.htm )

DNA Test Project.

In conjunction with Bill Cotgreave of New York who is registered as a One-Name–Study for the names COTGRAVE/COTGREAVE we have recently carried out a DNA Test Project to resolve the problem of a possible common origin  for all three surnames. (See The History of the Cotgrove Family. Part 2 for details of this possible connection and Notes on DNA).

The results of this Project are now available and can be studied in detail at :-http://www.familytreedna.com/public/cotgreave/. and dnaresults.html

These show that there is no, and never was any connection between the Cotgroves of Leigh and the Cotgreaves/Cotgraves of Cheshire.

My thanks to all the volunteers who provided the test samples, at their own expence, to settle this uncertainty for once and for all.

Having shown that the Cotgroves are not connected with the Cheshire families no further volunteers are required from the Cotgroves.

1901 Census.

This is now available on the Internet and I have begun the analysis of the results.  The index contains many errors and omissions but I have found several  “new”  Cotgroves to place in their rightful place on the tree being the total at that time in England and Wales to 234. See Christmas 2003 Newsletter.

1841 Census.

Part Three of the Book contains details of the Cotgroves in Leigh at the time of the 1841 Census.  A Table included in this part shows all known members of the Family at that date and this Table now appears on the web site.  (Click here to view it but you must have an Acrobat Reader, which can be down loaded free of charge.

Henry John’s Shipmates.

As you know Henry John Cotgrove was on HMS Cambridge during the 1840s ( SeeThe First Wave of Migrants.htm#sailorhenry).  I have recently heard from a lady whose own ancestor also served on that ship at the same time.  She has letters from her sailor and I hope to be able to give extracts from these shortly.
