The Greenhill Mathemagical Mystery Tour

Welcome to Greenhills first Internet Mystery Tour. This is in fact my first attempt at web page design, so its pretty basic I'm afraid!!

Your job is to correctly answer the following questions. Each question will link you to a web site, answer the questions from the information given.

1. I am thinking of a number smaller than 100. It is both a Square Number, and a Triangular Number (if you don't know what these are click here and visit the dictionary). This number is the capacity of a beer barrel and the length of Loch Ness. Using these clues, go to Numberland , find the number and write down three more facts relating to that number and its Square Root.

2. In order to help you answer the question, "What use is studying Maths?", visit Mathsyear2000 - Top Jobs, or for an American slant Career Profiles. Choose three different profiles and briefly describe why these people need maths skills.

3. Now visit the NRICH Problem Page, copy one of the questions and try to answer it. If you are happy with your solution, e-mail your solution to the NRICH team.

4. Go to Interactive Mathematics Miscellany and Puzzles and try to beat the computer at the Aliquot Game. If successful, write down your strategy.

5. Choose the comic Parallel Lines and explain why the cartoon is humerous.

6. Go to Ask Dr Math and see if you can solve the mystery as to why minus times minus equals plus. Write down two different explainations.

7. I am planning to holiday in Japan this year. Go to WORLDTIME and find out what the time difference is between our countries. I intend to change £500 into the local currency. Vist the The Universal Currency Converter and find out what the local currency is called, and how much of it I will get for my £500.

8. Visit the Maths Museum and find out how Maths is used in Warfare. Try and answer the three questions, write down the correct answers.

9. Finally, because you've worked so hard, how about a game of Maths Gorilla?

Now take your work to your teacher. Merits will be given for the most complete answers.

If you know of any sites that could be included in this Mystery Tour, then let me know (merits available in exchange for good links!).
