LEVY Mr Edward. Spy No. 229 The Daily Telegraph. Took the title for a £ 1200 debt. Levy's were small printers in Shoe Lane Fleet Street. Col. Sleigh who had founded the Telegraph ran into financial problems. Levy's father took the copyright for the amount he owed. Coloured. c. 8x14 ins.

Barking Abbey, Gateway, Essex. Engraved by Noble from a drawing by S.Prout. April 1 1807.
[1843 description: Ancient Benedictine Abbey, burnt by the danes, rebuilt by King Edgar, of which only an square embattled gateway alone remains, over it is the chapel of the Holy Rood; the arch is pointed, and above there is a cannopied niche with pinnicles. This structure has octagonal turrets rising from the ground on either side.

[In 1843 it had already been a ruin for nearly two centuries, 'but still shows some of ther most exquisite fragments of Norman architecture to be found in the kingdom']

The Roman Baths, Bath, England, UK. An early photograph showing the remains before renovation - date not stated but people dressed possibly for the 1880s/90s. Sign on the wall says York Street, sign 'Billiards'. A uniform warder stands ready. The lady with a bustle dress has left her box of books on the chair and gone to look at something, while the photographer takes the photograph. The victorians would have considered these Romantic Ruins. [photo: albumen print, creased and damaged - could be restored if required]. [137KB]
