China

I lived in China for three years (1994-1996) working with V.S.O. training prospective and existing English teachers.. I was therefore able to travel extensively throughout this fascinating country. My first two years were spent in Guizhou Province, in the Southwest of China. It is home to many of China’s minority groups, such as the colourful Miao tribe, pictured here in front of the largest waterfall in Asia. The minorities are quite shy and live in remote areas to avoid the overpowering number of Han Chinese who make up 95% of the population. Other local minority groups included the Shui people below. Their constumes are less ornate but have beautiful singing voices and unique folk songs. On my travels I met many other fascinating minority groups such as the BuYi, Dai, Bai, Hui and Uighur people. These children are from the Tibetan minority, living just outside of Tibet in the Gansu province.
