I spent 2 weeks travelling around Egypt (just as the Gulf War was coming to an end). In Cairo I got to see the Pyramids (with very few other tourists due to the war) and the Tutankhamun exhibition in the Egyptian Museum. After 3 days in Cairo I took an overnight train trip down to Aswan in southern Egypt (Upper Nile) to view the imposing temples at Abu Simbel (on the Sudanese border) and the beautiful Temple of Philae set on an idyllic island in the Nile. Then later up to Luxor for the best of the sightseeing, with the Valley of the Kings (Pharaoh burial sites) the Temple of Luxor and the Temple of Karnak (perhaps the best of them all). Then a day on a bus and boat to get to Sharm el Sheikh, where I did 2 days of scuba diving. Unfortunately, I had a cold by then, and also some of my scuba equipment went wrong, so it wasn’t as good diving as it could have been. Plus, the more interesting fish seemed to be elsewhere at the times we dived! Then back to England via Cairo. And finally, a rather interesting landing at Heathrow. After some heavy turbulence, at 20ft to go, the pilot had to power up the engines and overfly - apparently another plane was still on the runway! We flew back through the turbulence again and thankfully made it safely down on the second attempt! Phew!
