I spent two weeks in Kenya in 2001, visiting Krista, a friend who was working in Nairobi for Medair. We firstly spent 3 nights at Elsamere (where Joy Adamson wrote "Born Free"). It's a beautiful house on the shores of Lake Naivasha. We ate very well there, and so did the hippos each night, grazing on the lawns! We visited a local safari park in which you can, unusually, walk or cycle. We toured around on bikes all day, getting very sunburnt, and spotting zebra, warthogs, antelope, gazelles, eagles etc. But although they are apparently common there, we would have to wait a week or so for our fill of giraffes. We decided to travel down to Mombasa on the coast by train. Unfortunately we came to a stop 4 hours from the station and had to hire a bus for the rest! We visited friends of Krista. Steve and Rose showed us their new house and cook us traditional Kenyan food! We later flew back to Nairobi, grateful that the plane didn't stop 4 hours from its destination! From Nairobi, we took a car safari to the National Park. We were really lucky with the animals we saw there including rare sights like rhinos and lion cubs. And later, we went to "Carnivores" restaurant to eat some of the local wildlife - antelope, zebra and crocodile for me! Throughout the trip, we avoided the rains and met some really nice people. A great trip!
