In 2002 I spent the summer travelling around South America for a month, eventually reaching six countries. In Asuncion, Paraguay I found a battleship (even though they have no coast!). Then I needed to take a long 36 hour bus journey through the Chaco wastelands
There was lots to see and do in Bolivia, including wild sloths in Santa Cruz, getting "arrested" in Cochabamba, Lake Titicaca, llamas in Copacabana and the breathless high altitude of La Paz.
Peru was full of fascinating Incan ruins including the awesome Machu Picchu - secret city of the Incas built amongst the mountain tops. It tool smoe getting to, but finally seeing it was the highlight of the whole trip.
Chile was busy celebrating Children's Day when I arrived, with lots of street events and competitions. I entered into the spirit by going to the circus one evening. On another day, I explored a ghost-town in Humberstone.
The 275 waterfalls making up the Iguacu Falls were another highlight. The Brasilian side gave great overall views, whilst the Argentinian side allowed you to get close up. Very impressive. In Rio de Janiero I went up Sugarloaf mountain (which was fog bound) and later on to the famous statue of Christ overlooking the city. On the last day, I saw an exciting football match at the Maracana Stadium featuring Romario and ending 5 v 1 A great end to a fantastic trip.
