Zimbabwe

Although I had visited North African countires before, I hadn’t seen much else of Africa. So I decided to visit Zimbabwe, particularly as I had friends there. One was an American called Julie (shown here with her class) who was working with the Peace Corps in a small rural school. The other was the Graces, a family who lived in the capital, Harare. Apart from seeing friends, I also really wanted to see the mighty Victoria Falls, famously discovered by Dr Livingstone. Here the Zambezi gushes down a mile wide cliff. A spectacular sight.

I was persuaded to go rafting for a day down the Zambezi rapids. It was a wild journey with plenty of capsizing going on! On the next day, I fulfilled an ambition to do a bungee jump. This was apparently the second highest in the world, and it really felt it!

Zimbabwe is a land in great turmoil and, while there, I managed to get caught up in two riots! This one was by government workers who hadn't been paid. But, I still had a great time during my two weeks in Zimbabwe.
